Our class novel is currently The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, a book told from the point of view of a fifteen year old boy with Asperger's. A large part of the unit, aside from going over literary characteristics and features, is centered around the idea of social norms. In fact, by the end of the unit, the students are going to have to compile all that they've read/seen and write an essay that answers the question "Is 'normal' a real thing?" (only the essay prompt will be worded better).
Anyway, I've taken it upon myself to go hardcore liberal agenda in this thing. So, we're definitely going to talk about mental illness and they're going to read articles from the past and present and from different parts of the world and they're going to examine artwork and photographs depicting mental illness but, since we're also talking about social norms, I'm going gay.
Like, way gay. And there's nothing you can do about it.
I'm going to make them watch a movie about Two-Spirited people and read related informational texts about that. We'll follow up with related readings, maybe about Matthew Shepherd at Laramie or Tyler Clemente. I'm going to try to find something on global perspectives, too. And I'm planning a roundtable discussion on youth/hate crimes (as it relates to social norms).
Because even in the Down and Dirty South, I'd really kind of like to push my own liberal homo agenda.
YAY!
PS: Teacher work days are such a fucking joke. I need to work in a state with a union.
i'm a teacher too!,
so gay!,
