Fandom Fun?

I didn't have an auspicious start to the day. Sometime between when I went to bed last night and when I officially woke up this morning, I had a serious bout with motion sickness. I get this occasionally, but it's always very out of the blue. The worst I remember it being was way back in 10th grade French III. I was taking a test and suddenly the entire room started shaking. I remember immediately dropping my pencil and grabbing the desk to stay upright. When it stopped, I looked around and everyone was still calmly taking their tests.

When something like that happens in your head, it's kind of scary. Believe me when I say I've had several MRIs taken because even my doctors are like, "WTF?" They always come up negative but I confess there's a large part of me that will not be surprised if I someday get diagnosed with a brain ailment.

But, anyway, it happened to me again early this morning as I was turning over. And it's stayed with me a lot of today, though it's certainly improved.

I've been able to weather it, though, because today has been an awesome media blitz day by the American soccer team. I'm so excited! First, they were on The Today Show, and The Early Show, and Good Morning America. This afternoon, I caught Hope Solo and Alex Morgan on Sports Center. Tonight, various team members will be on Rachel Maddow and The Daily Show and Hope Solo and Abby Wambach are going to be on Letterman.

Fire up the DVR! (Added to this is the bonus of Jenna Fischer appearing on Jay Leno. Jenna is the best kind of Jay guest because she always has a great story and she never lets Jay talk and the less Jay talks, the better.)

Plus, I have a Hope Solo icon. I mean, c'mon. Aside from barely being able to move my head for fear of going back into an internal earth quake zone, today has been awesome.

But I wonder how far my love for this team will go? Will it develop into a long term thing or will it fizzle out when I eventually figure out that barely any game will be shown on TV between now and the Olympics? (I need to figure out if I get Fox Sports because there's a WPS game on tomorrow and my favorite goalie is supposed to be there . . . Which surprises me because that's a ridiculously short turnaround from playing the final game in the WC, flying back here, and having a huge day in NYC.)

Still, my love is in its infancy, though I have spent an inordinate amount of time on YouTube and you can bet I'm going to get the newest edition of Sport Illustrated that has the awesome Hope Solo on the cover (I think I read that it's the first female soccer player on the cover since 2003.)

Let's follow my trajectory of fandom:

1) Fifth grade (1997): Star Wars. Officially lasted though the end of sixth grade.

2) Summer between sixth and seventh grade (1998): Natalie Wood. Officially lasted until the fall of seventh grade.

3) Seventh grade (1998): The X-Files. Officially lasted . . . Well, I can't remember. Definitely past 2002 but didn't last past 2004.

4) Summer between ninth and tenth grade (2001): Jennifer Capriati. Officially lasted through 2004 (because that's when she played her last match) and co-existed for a while with The X-Files, which was rare because I don't do too well with two things to obsess over at one time.

5) Sophomore year of college (2006): The Office. I still watch this, but my love for it has definitely dwindled. I'd say it lasted until 2009.

6) Senior year of college (2007): Battlestar Galactica. Officially, my obsessive nature with this show ended last spring when I finished my reviews (2010) but I plan on revisiting it soon in the future.

7) Adulthood (2010): Xena: Warrior Princess. Still in love with it, what can I say?

Will the WNT join this elite group of obsession? Only time will tell.

Now, if you don't mind, I'm off to the bar to play some trivia. I hope that my dizziness remains somewhat contained. (Today I've taken Advil and ginger pills and have been wearing my pressure point wrist bracelet, which helped me a ton in Malaysia.)

sporting, battlestar galactica, wtf?, xena!, hope solo springs eternal, the office, television, reflections 'n such, history tangent
