Elementary teachers:

Just wondering how teachers start their days. What goes on in the first 20 minutes of school whlie they enter and announcements are on?

I teach grade 5/6 and I do a class meeting for 10 minutes after 10 minutes of Bell work.

However, I feel like this 10 minutes of Bell Work is almost a waste and am thinking maybe instead of wasting that 10 minutes, they can just enter the class and immediately get into a circle.

My students often trickle in but since it's just our class meeting it's not like being late will be them missing instruction since I won't start teaching officially until 15 minutes after the bell.

My only concern is that I like that 10 minutes while they do "busy work" to check off forms and money that has been brought in so then at our meeting I can update them on who owes what form.

Thoughts? My class last year did word wall stuff but I've phased out the traditional word wall so I'm not sure.   Even a simple 2 minute thing to get them quietly settled would be good.
