My prompt:

“Christ, Bodie, the old man knows.”

“Yeah.”

Uneasy silence wrapped around them as they stood in the hall outside Cowley’s office.

Doyle looked up at the ceiling. “What’re we going to do?”

Eyes closed, Bodie didn’t respond.

“Oh that’s just great, mate. So cool aren’t you? You can’t fool me, y’know.” Doyle moved in front of his partner and stabbed a stiff finger into Bodie’s chest. “I saw your face when he dropped us in it.”

Bodie shifted away from the prodding and pinned his oppo with a fierce glare. “Calm down, Ray.”

“Good advice, that. Calm down.” Doyle laughed bitterly. “You looked like someone pissed on your chips.”

“Yeah, well -- don’t like to let him down.”

“And what about me? S’ok to let me down? Pretty quick on the denial, you were.”

“Don’t be stupid, Doyle.”

“Doyle, eh? That’s not what you called me this morning when I had your prick -”

“Enough!” Bodie spat through clenched teeth. “You tryin’ to get us sacked?”

“No. No. Sorry.” Doyle rubbed the bridge of his nose. He looked down at his boots and whispered, “Don’t want to lose you.”

Bodie’s anger faded; he reached out and gently lifted Doyle’s face, easily reading the misery there. “Daft, sod. It’ll take more than whatever Cowley comes up with to separate us, yeah?” He ruffled Doyle’s curls.

“Gerroff!” Doyle pushed Bodie’s hand away, a smile firmly in place. “I think -”

“3.7! 4.5! My office, now!” Cowley’s voice startled them both.

“This could be it, Bodie.”

“Nah,” Bodie winked, “Remember, replacements are very expensive.”
