Bodie moved silently, footsteps light on the stairs. He’d perfected this technique of moving noiselessly through his years with the mercs. It had come in handy more than once in his career with CI5, often saving his life... or his partner’s. It was against that partner that he was now employing the skill.

Ray was being very secretive of late, often disappearing after work, declining invitations for a pint or a take-away. Bodie was determined to find out why. Christmas was coming after all, and he suspected Ray was hiding his gift. He eased quietly into the second bedroom in Ray’s flat, and stopped short. Sitting in the centre of the room was an easel with a half finished portrait. Only the face was complete, the body and background roughly sketched in. But the face... Bodie shuddered.

The painted expression was relaxed. The lips gently curved into an affectionate grin. Dark hair was tussled, like the subject was standing in a slight breeze, or... no, more like he had just risen from his bed. Distinctively familiar eyebrows framed deep blue eyes that revealed everything the soul hiding behind them had tried so very hard to conceal. Bodie closed those eyes. Bloody hell. Had he been that obvious? How had Ray worked out... the ratty bastard was a detective, of course he’d seen.

So what to do now; could he carry on and pretend he didn’t know that Ray had sussed him out?
His options diminished when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Ray had his own technique for moving quietly.

“Couldn’t wait ‘til Christmas, eh? You’re worse than a four year-old when it comes to pressies!” The words admonished, but the voice was filled with warm affection.

Bodie turned, shrugging. “You...” The words stopped when he met eyes that reflected back all the feelings the man in the portrait had been unable to cover up.

“Silly sod,” Ray ran a finger gently down Bodie’s cheek. “Did you really think you could keep your feelings from me?”

Ray moved closer and took Bodie’s face in his hands. He pressed his lips gently to Bodie’s. One of them was trembling. The kiss deepened. Hands moved over shoulders and chests, clothing disappearing in their wake. Bodies moved in rhythm. It was awkward, but the shared look confirmed it; this was a technique they were willing to take the steps to improve.
