Breaking Even: Kathleen Kole
Penelope has been engaged to Ben for three years now, but is still yet to set a date. Helping her future sister in law one morning with her nephews Pen meets Scott, or single Dad to Pen and her two future sister in laws. Scott sparks something in Pen who makes her question her relationship with Ben and what she really wants. The book follows as she figures that out and how effects her, Ben, Scott, Kris and Renee (her FSILs) and the rest of the family.

I thought the character development in this book was an important part if it's appeal to me. So,it I'd great that for her guest post Kole wrote about her relationship to the characters.

My relationship to my characters.

When I sit down to create a story, I don’t think of the story as mine. In my mind, the story belongs to my characters and I’m just the facilitator - telling it, creating it, bringing it to life on their behalf. That being said, once the story is finished and I step back to reflect, I am usually surprised to find that I can relate to many aspects of my character’s stories. In “Breaking Even”, that discovery held true.

The three main female characters in “Breaking Even” all have very different issues, no question. However, no matter how different, nor how things are dressed, they have a common thread between them; they are all women, trying to find balance in their lives. As a woman, a Mother, a wife and now an author, I can relate wholeheartedly to the idea of being vigilant about balancing the varied aspects in my life - while still trying to retain a part of myself, for me. It isn’t always easy.

I would have to say the most important thing I’ve learned, and hopefully taught to my characters, is that it is my attitude that determines the ease, or not, of each day. If I approach it as a race, I inevitably make it a chore. If I turn my attention, instead, in the other direction and remind myself that I only have the day I am in, I relax and flow with it so much better.

Like my characters in “Breaking Even”, where each one of them comes to their own, personal, understanding that life is all about the choices made, I too have gleaned that the days are a whole lot more fun when you consciously participate.

Overall, I would suggest this book to others and give it a 4 star review.
