"What's up?" Justin asks, pink ice cream smeared at the corner of his mouth until Austin leans over and licks it off. Twelve hours on a plane, then several more in a hire car, and he finds himself in a motel in a town called Magdalena, in New Mexico. The next day, he consults a road map and drives out to the Very Large Array. He spends a few hours there, walking around the museum and soaking up the desert atmosphere.
On the way out, he buys a postcard of the array. He doesn’t write a message on the back, just Alice’s name and the address of the secure hospital. He posts it before he goes home.
**
Alice doesn’t get a lot of post. She’s allowed it, in theory, as long as no-one tries to send anything that might be considered dangerous. Postcards, fortunately, make the list of what is safe.
She smiles when she sees the postcard, and she knows who it is from.
She keeps the postcard under her pillow when she sleeps.
