30 - accusation
he hears their cries still, mothers begging for the heavens to give back their sons, the tiny wails of children who are lost now without a parent’s hand to guide them. the worst are the insults, the accusations from mourning mothers. they call him monster, demon, the harbinger from the burning skies. jongdae remembers each and every one of their faces, furious and sorrowful eyes, red from weeping and cheeks streaked with all their tears.
he cannot escape them even in his sleep - no, in the dead of night they are louder than ever.
but he cannot stop. this war was what he was created for. time and time again, jongdae, no, chen is brought out to the war zone, an ultimate weapon, raining judgement down from the skies.
the platform he is chained to floats slowly to the center of the battlefield. at this moment, he is not jongdae, a scared little child afraid of his own shadow, he is chen, a living weapon shown off by the capitol as a symbol of their might, their power. again and again, he calls lightning down, bolts smiting every and all of their enemies with dead eyes.
but once he is put back in his room, a little chamber of nothing but white, he is jongdae once more. each and every single time, the voices grow louder. no matter how much he covers his ears, how many times he screams in his sleep for them to stop, they do not leave.
my son, my son!! wretched capitol, give him back! give me back my son!
he can only cry, until his throat is hoarse, his voice reduced to a gurgle as he pleads for them to leave him be, that he is sorry. on the worst of nights, he begs them to just kill him and be done with it.
but no, this night will be just like the last. he will live and destroy and they will haunt him for it until his end days.
