30 Days of Song: day 01 - Your favourite song

Jan 27, 2013 20:00

It's impossible for me to pick out one song as an overall favourite, so I've chosen a song that I can always listen to and which never seems to leave my mp3 player: Patti Smith's 'Dancing Barefoot' from her 1979 album Wave.

I came to Patti Smith when I was about 20 and picked up Horses in a 3-for-a-tenner CD sale. I just love everything about this song, the opening chords, the swirling melody, the enigmatic lyrics, the 'heart beat' percussion on the refrain, and the way it always makes me want to dance. I often listen to it on the way to work; it gets me going for the day.

Patti Smith is also someone I look up to as a model for becoming a person, so I think it's appropriate to pick one of her songs as my favourite. She just seems to be so utterly uncompromising in her insistence on being fully who she is at all times and that's a quality I really aspire to.

And, maybe it's got something to do with my feeling that I'm spinning kind of ceaselessly in my own life.

I've included two versions here, the one on the original studio album and an acoustic version from an episode of 'Later with Jools Holland'.  I couldn't find my absolute favourite version on You Tube which is the one on the 2004 live albu Trampin' ... Live aux Vieilles Charrues

'Dancing Barefoot'

She is benediction
She is addicted to thee
She is the root connection
She is connecting with he

Here I go and I don't know why
I flow so ceaselessly
Could it be he's taking over me

I'm dancing barefoot
Headin' for a spin
Some strange music draws me in
It makes me come up like some heroine

She is sublimation
She is the essence of thee
She is concentrating on
He who is chosen by she

Here I go when I don't know why
I spin so ceaselessly
Could it be he's taking over me

I'm dancing barefoot
Headin' for a spin
Some strange music drags me in
Makes me come up like some heroine

She is recreation
She intoxicated by thee
She has the slow sensation that
He is levitating with she

Here I go when I don't know why
I spin so ceaselessly
'Til I lose my sense of gravity

I'm dancing barefoot
Heading for a spin
Some strange music draws me in
Makes me come up like some heroine

Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
Oh God I fell for you
