Today was noteworthy because:

* It's Shrove Tuesday. I'm pretty sure I've written about it before, but I still think it's funny that we've done away with Lent in Sweden (Lutheranism and all that) but keep the eat-delicious-but-unhealthy-stuff-to-prepare-for-Lent tradition in the form of semla eating. Of course, nowadays the semla season is quite long (especially with the introduction of the saffron semla before Christmas) but today is its peak. I actually didn't eat one today, but will probably do so tomorrow.

* It's the start of the annual national book sale. Not the wisest choice of day I think because most people get their paychecks on the 25th, but anyway. I can't find any English-language pages about the book sale (though admittedly I didn't search very thoroughly) but it's quite a big thing, most if not all bookstores have plenty of books on sale and there are editions of books printed specifically for the sale. I don't plan to buy anything this year, but I might check the stores to see if there's anything interesting.

* The crown princess of Sweden announced her engagement. Or, rather, her father the king did, I guess. Didn't see the press conference. It's kind of big though because the princess and her now-fiancé have been dating for years and it's been discussed whether they'll be allowed to get married at all, as he's a commoner. They met when he was her personal trainer at a gym. I'm happy for them, but think the whole monarchy thing is weird. Very, very weird. The current royal family actually only goes back to some random guy from the French army (one who had incidentally been very close to invading Sweden in the Napoleonic wars) who was appointed king in the early 19th century.
