Analyzation of Songs

I dun wanna sleep! So much crap for mondays...

Anyway, a few years ago, that is, 1979, Brenda Ann Spencer killed a principal and custodian at Cleveland Elementary School, and wounded what, eight children? Her dad had given her a shotgun for Christmas, and likened her shooting spree to shooting ducks in a pond. Hm. "I don't like Mondays..." inspired the Boomtown Rats song. And I saw it on the Breakfast club, just graffiti.

Filardo mentioned something about Lennon's "Imagine". It's such a sad song, really. It's pure wishful thinking. I remember a few lyrics that just really...hit hard. I think it was written around the time of WWII, but I'm not sure. I don't really want to look it up. Anyway, there's a part when these kids come, and they start singing, "War is over, if you want it. War is over, hallelujah." I don't know why, but I find it depressing.

Speaking of Hallelujah, has anyone heard Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah"? That one is also depressing. My favorite parts have to be, "it goes like this, the minor fall the major lift..." and another part, "Love is not a vict'ry march, It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah". I think it might have something to do with sex, though. I don't really want to go into it, but the melody...is so beautiful. I haven't heard the remake, but I think Buckley really made this song special. and I mean really really special.

While we're on the subject of depressing songs, the most would have to be "Gloomy Sunday", sung by Bjork or Billie Holiday. I love both versions. Otherwise known as the Hungarian Suicide Song, it has a haunting melody, depressing lyrics, and a tragic story. Maybe not that tragic. The writer/composer wrote the song after breaking up or losing his lover/girlfriend. Shortly after, he committed suicide. As the song hit the airwaves in Europe, apparently there was a wave of suicides attributed to this song. It was banned or something, I'm not sure. "Angels have no thought of ever returning you. Would they be angry if I thought of joining you..."

This has become quite depressing. How about something fun? I'm not really in the mood...but the song "What is Love" is very addictive. "What is love? Baby, don't hurt me. Don't hurt. No more." repeat. Very interesting. Annoying, if sung the right way. It should be one of the theme songs of the Table. And if the Table ever makes a band, we'll do a cover on this. Okay?

What else...I've got to go back to depressing songs. Miyavi's "Itoshi Hito" is so....I don't know, but I love it. He has two versions, the original and the 2006 version. He whisper-sings for a lot of it, and then he just outright sings later in his song. His voice has this unique quality...it's strange, kinda scratchy and forlorn, but I love it. Not everyone could. About the song, it features a soft guitar (courtesy of Miyavi's amazing talent and his guitar), and his odd harmonies. I think he's singing all the parts, because this song is probably from the times when he did everything in his songs (intrumentals, singing, arranging, etc.) Anyway, sometimes, the harmonies sound strange, but I think it just contributes to the overall effect of the song. Toward the beginning of the song, you can hear him kinda crying. At the end, he softens his voice again to the whisper-singing, the guitar tones down a lot, and he says, "sore de ii nda yo." ( That is good.) The PV (music video) is so incredibly beautiful. The entire video is kinda broken up, like...at parts when he gets really intense, the film does this weird thing, but it has a really cool effect. Anyway, red rose petals everywhere, he's clad in white/gray rags, and his hair is gray/black and messy. He's wearing mascara, all his piercings, and has this shy mien. He's floating for a lot of it, but it's so BEAUTIFUL, I love it. At one point, there are these two children, girls, one blond and one black-haired, skipping around him, who is on the ground, crumpled. Then it shows him holding a baby or something and towards the end, he drops it, and you see it on the ground in swaddling white rags, and as the camera zooms in, it turns into an image of him in the place of the baby.

Okay, PVs, there's a crazy Dir en Grey video, "Obscure", and it is so disturbing. If you want nightmares, watch this video. Blood, vomiting, nakedness, cannibalism, everything. It's crazy. And there's a clown too. I watched the uncensored version (if the censored version wasn't bad enough) during English one day, and I had to stop myself from staring at the screen in shock and horror...and not to laugh, because once you get over the disturbing-ness, you either find a deep quality to it (anti-abortion) or you laugh. At one point, there's a geisha who is eating a baby. People have suggested that the message is anti-abortion and the horrors of abortion. Or rape, or something. *shiver*

XD So anyway, I think Will Smith just woke my dog. It's fun to have just random music playing in no specific playlist or order. So I'm typing about Dir en Grey...and Will Smith starts rapping. My favorite rap song, EVER. Except maybe the APL song. That is an amazing song. It's so sad, too. I mean, the APL song is probably somewhat of a didactic song, to explain his life, to show what he went through, and to suggest that people should be grateful for growing up in America.

Speaking of America, I just remembered a RENT song, "Santa Fe". There's a line, where he says something along the lines of, "I'm trying to teach them (something, I forget), but they would rather watch tv. America. America!" It's anti-New York and pro-Santa Fe. RENT is a great musical. Watch the movie. Or watch the musical. I really want to. They came, but apparently, the tickets were too expensive. It has a lot of sexual references, what with AIDS and a transvestite and lesbians, but it's pretty good. I don't think the Pope would it, however.

I should shower now...about 12:00. Anyway...I'll post the lyrics to Miyavi's "Itoshi Hito" in english. Of course, some things are lost in the translation, but you can get the gist of it. I think it's shortened, because he repeats certain parts...

" My beloved...Don't cry, show me your smile
If I wanted to see your tears, I wouldn't have said 'I like you', would I?

My beloved... It's okay, you're not alone
Because when you're feeling lonely, I'll feel lonely too

My beloved...Don't open your closed eyes
Just like that...just like that...but don't go to sleep (laugh)

My Beloved

Not 'For you I would die' but rather I've decided, 'For you I live'
Of course together with you too
Now, forever, and ever

If you love yourself more, can I have a part of that excess love?

Beloved, beloved one...

Even if we were to be born again
I will still be 'this' me and you will still be 'that' you
And then, I will say the same words again
Always, always..

My beloved...Please open your eyes slowly
It's the same as always, isn't it?
It's fine just like this, this is good.
