Day 236 - Stairwell, originally uploaded by

I've assumed for a while that I would get some good use out of the stairwells in our building, photographically speaking. Tonight was a fun attempt along those lines. But I'm ahead of myself.
Took a day off (precious vacation days, *sigh*), and went with Victoria to the NYC stop of
The Flash Bus Tour. I knew right away when I first read that they were doing the tour, I would pay a decent chunk to see
Joe McNally and
David Hobby talk about lighting with small flashes. When I found out that it was under $100 for the day-long event, I was stunned. With Victoria's recent gaining interest in photography generally, I realized it made good sense to sign us both up.
And the day was really very impressive. The little stuff (gear recommendations) and the big stuff (fundamental techniques and approaches) that I learned today were really exciting, and the day just generally flew by. After the event, Victoria and I headed right over to Adorama (amusingly, basically on the way home, maybe a 2 block detour) and picked up a little bit of extra gear. Went home, made a quick dinner, rooted through the goody bags, and took the new camera (squee!), new gear, and new thoughts out for a spin.
And, lighting being what it is, were promptly beat over the head with hard stuff. The lighting in the stairwell is cheap florescent. I couldn't gel to match. Stairwells are a pain because you can't actually set anything down anywhere (railings are slanted, there isn't much level floor space). But that's to be expected, and in the end, for a total spur-of-the-moment thing, I like where I ended up with it.
