okay, so you've read Andrew Hickey histories like California Dreaming .. or analyses like An Incomprehensible Condition: An Unauthorised Guide to Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers, but did anything prepare you for *this* series (Radio Patrick in Newton, MA raised my awareness) that has as much in common with James Burke's old 'Connections' program or an Adam Curtis documentary?
In September 1995, just weeks after Jerry Garcia’s death, an article was published in Mute magazine identifying a cultural trend that had shaped the nineties, and would as it turned out shape at least the next thirty years. It’s titled “The Californian Ideology”, though it may be better titled “The Bay Area Ideology”, and it identifies a worldview that had grown up in Silicon Valley, based around the ideas of the hippie movement, of right-wing libertarianism, of science fiction authors, and of Marshall McLuhan.
It starts “There is an emerging global orthodoxy concerning the relation between society, technology and politics. We have called this orthodoxy `the Californian Ideology’ in honour of the state where it originated. By naturalising and giving a technological proof to a libertarian political philosophy, and therefore foreclosing on alternative futures, the Californian Ideologues are able to assert that social and political debates about the future have now become meaningless.

.. suggested Miyuki Miyabe and i *took the plunge* with All She Was Worth, a credit report mystery from the early 1990s. and i was 2/3rds the way into it and [ethereal] Whoosh, book does a dead vanish somewhere between Crystal Spring 7-11 parking lot and the Crystal Spring 7-11 parking lot. RECONCILED to its never-coming-back, i moved on to Leonora Carrington's The Hearing Trumpet, a funnier, sadder, heavier work than, say, Mrs Ted Bliss (and the riffing on Fourth Way schools is a *hoot*).

Bruce Adams’ Chicagocentic, Krankycentric You’re With Stupid (2022) with FAILURE TO THRIVE (2021) by Meghan Lamb (of Chicago’s Kill Scenes). quietly devastating, whisperingly bleak / i dare anybody to build a soundtrack around it, ‘cause it’s just going to meet at certain (torn) corners (and *that* only in patches of Suggestion ..): The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972), Broadcast - “Winter Now,” the Life and Art of Francesca Woodman, “Porpoise Song” - th’ Monkees, THREATS - Amelia Gray, Hal Hartley’s “Long Island Trilogy,” East Coker (tsEliot), Will Self - How the Dead Live, The Lookout (2007). recommended, hey !
