Overpowered by consular guards and turned over to the police the assassin admitted to being a member of the ‘Fly Tox Movement’ an extremist sect who hold hashish in horror getting their kicks largely from vitamin deficiency a preparation like that you can get on his line sweet and clear.
“Can you hear me Homer? Of course you can. I’m telling you what you have to do Homer. We will protect you Homer. Flying saucers will be waiting after you have done our bidding ..”

EVINRUDIE CAN’T FAIL
.. was 1975 a big year for fishing movies? I can think of only 92 in the Shade [pictured below] and, um, JAWS. and what is the genealogy of the first picture, written/directed by Thomas McGuane? the romance of Hemi gway in th’ Keys / a shadow, I’m sure, cast over 1973 documentary TARPON (with Papa’s most tormented son R. Brautigan, McGuane himself, and - on soundtrack - McGuane’s tropics-obsessed, boat-drink drinkin’ brother-in-law). it’s not a “heavy” film, although there’s some gunplay and possible murder / nor is it exactly a comedy : the funnier moments are of the time-passing sort that emerge from exhaustion, boredom, or thwarted aims. its relation to more .. kinetic and/or substantial product - say, 1974’s Cockfighter (also with Warren Oates & Harry Dean Stanton) or, jeez louise, 1975’s Race with the Devil (also with Oates and, sporting the thousand-yard stare he wore throughout the decade, Peter Fonda ..) - is *not dissimilar* to the kinship between John Huston’s Maltese Falcon and its red-headed step-cousin Beat the Devil (1953), hey !

* .. a-and Andrew Horton reminded me of 1975’s NIGHT MOVES : how could I have missed the hundred-pound grouper in th’ room ?

** The house belonging to James Woods' character Quentin was owned by Phil Kaufman, road manager for Gram Parsons at the time of Parsons's death. Kaufman's subsequent actions became the basis for the 2003 film Grand Theft Parsons. The cast and crew of Night Moves were shooting at the house on the day the police came to question Kaufman, and as they were taking him away, Arthur Penn turned to Gene Hackman and said, "Man, we're shooting the wrong movie."

* 10/26/89 : A man punched Sen. John Glenn on the chin yesterday as Glenn was giving a television interview after a tree-planting ceremony at the National Air and Space Museum. Glenn immediately grabbed the man and held him for security guards. The Ohio Democrat was not seriously injured, and police said the well-dressed assailant, who witnesses said was muttering about earthquakes and revelations during the attack, was in custody last night. "This fella just walked up and bang, that was it," Glenn said in an interview. "I never saw the punch."

.. an-tho' i cannot in good conscience recommend Marisha Pessl's Night Film, it *did* ghet me to thinking on what does-and-does-not make for a good YARN :

Gaucho - Steely Dan (I mislaid my copy roundabout the time DeVaughn left the ROA gateway for the Post Office ..)
The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon (this is the one I picked up at the synagogue book sale, the one I haggled *up* for. read on the train to Alexandria some year or other)
Running Dog - Don DeLillo (a generally underrated Entertainment / underrated by most everybody ‘cept Wm Gibson, who seems to’ve borried from it for his DC & Environs as represented in 2007’s Spook Country)
Remember to Recycle - Tantra Bensko (next level stuff and the middle of a trilogy / but YOU - having been born - are no stranger to jumping in just enny ol’ place and Making Sense on the fly !)
Berberian Sound Studio - Broadcast (soundtrack to the .. Peter Strickland film i may try to watch next weekend. a *sensitive topic* as the Death of Trish Keenan shook me far more than the passing of Mark Linkous one year prior / a fact I cannot rightly account for except maybe Mark’s PREVIOUS death - in 1996 - maybe sorta/kinda took the edge off ..)
