Summary: Wufei goes to the hanger and finds an entirely different Nataku.
Wufei had his nose in a book as he headed to the hanger, intending to do some routine maintenance. Looking up at the Gundam, his eyes narrowed. He'd never left the hatch open when leaving the hanger.
Meiran was humming as she ran some checks on Nataku. It was nice to be back in the Gundam. Though, it was different...
His ears locked on the sound as he called down the zipline. It was almost achingly familiar...
The Chinese woman smiled and stretched in the seat. Her husband had done a good job of taking care of the Gundam.
Going up, he opened the hatch the rest of the way and froze, eyes wide. He had to be dreaming, had to.
She looked up and her eyes widened. "Wufei!
"Nataku?"
"Wufei!" She cried before non too smartly flinging herself at the older man. She knew he'd keep them balanced.
Wufei automatically wrapped his arms around the woman, his body responding to brace them while his brain remained in a state of shocked disbelief.
"You're here! Are you dead?! Damn it and I thought I didn't need to watch over you anymore! It's only been three years and you've already died?!"
"I'm not dead! You're- What do you mean it's only been three years?!" He held her at arms' length, staring at her. "You've gotten older?"
"Yep."
"Explain."
"You named your Gundam after me. I had to stick around and make sure nothing happened to you."
Wufei needed to sit down. So he did, dragging them both down onto the lowered hatch. "I think I knew..."
Meiran smiled and snuggled against him.
He held her tightly, cupping a hand against her cheek. The pilot was still wondering when he was going to wake up.
She leaned up, kissing him.
Wufei forgot to breathe for a moment before he returned the kiss. If this was real, he wasn't going to waste their second chance by hesitating.
She moved to kneel in front of him, arms wrapping around his neck.
He pulled her to him, hiding his face against her shoulder, breathing in her scent to refresh his memory.
"I'm here Wufei, I'm here."
He pulled back to look at her, expression a rare, soft smile.
"I've missed you Wufei."
"I've missed you too." The words sounded flat, hollow in comparison to the whirlwind of emotions surging through him.
She pulled back and smacked his arm, hard.
The smack snapped him of it in its familiarity. He cocked an eyebrow at her.
Meiran got up and then used the zipline to go down to the ground.
Wufei followed after her as quickly as he could. He was not going to let her out of his sight.
She laughed at Wufei, smiling.
He couldn't help but to return the smile, taking her hand.
She intertwined their fingers.
"How long have you been here?"
"I just woke up down on the beach."
He nodded. He had hundreds of questions for his wife but for the life of him couldn't figure out where to start. Pulling away, he used picking up the book he'd dropped for a moment to think.
Meiran watched her husband, smiling. She had changed in the years since she'd last seen him. She'd grown a bit taller, filled out, and her hair was longer too, which she currently had in a loose braid.
Irritatingly enough, Wufei was still just barely taller than she was, but at least they'd broken from their equal height that they'd been at before. But he wasn't really thinking about that at the moment. Straightening up, he brushed a hand over her hair, absently noticing the changes.
"I've missed you."
He smiled. "I believe we've already gone over that."
"I know. I thought I'd just say it again."
He leaned in to kiss her forehead. "Alright."
She smiled.
"How did you know to go to the hanger?"
"Just a guess."
He took her hand again, holding the book in his other. "Your guesses do tend to be strangely accurate."
"Knowing you my dear husband, you'd either be in the library, or hangar."
Wufei laughed softly. "I just came from the library, my dear wife. I work there."
"I figured."
"All adults are assigned jobs here on the island," he explained. "I'm fortunate to have been given one that suits."
"I hope I'm assigned the hangar."
"Perhaps you will be." Wufei smirked a little. "Or the flower shop."
She turned, punching her husband in the gut.
Dodging back to decrease the force hitting him, he laughed even as his hand came up to guard.
She frowned and then leapt at him.
He defended, falling back into familiar patterns.
Meiran grinned at Wufei and then kicked at his head. "You've been slouching!"
He ducked automatically. "Ha!"
Duo whistled to himself as he walked, hands clasped behind his head. Behind him, the almost fully grown Taffy followed, wagging her tail. As they reached the hangar, the dog barked at the sparring couple.
"You where a second late!" She said before kicking at his chest.
He grabbed her foot and twisted. "You're not any faster!"
"Wufei?" Duo asked, watching him fighting with a girl. That went against everything he knew about the Chinese pilot.
Meiran yanked her foot back from her husband.
Wufei looked up, cursing as he realized he'd let his attention slip.
She turned and looked at the new arrival. "Hello."
"Uh... hi..." Duo said, watching them. "Hey... I didn't think you fought against bleeding hearts and women, Wuffers," he said.
Meiran smacked Wufei upside the head. "Introduce us."
Duo's eyes almost popped out of his head.
He rubbed his head. "If you'd give me a moment. Maxwell, I'd like to you meet Chang Meiran, my wife."
"Ooooohhhh..." He looked her over. She suited him... a spitfire of a woman. Duo could see it in her stance and her eyes. "That explains a lot," he said with a grin.
"Forgive my husband's manners. He's always been more interested in books than people." She said waving off Wufei. Meiran grinned at Duo. "So, who are you?"
Wufei just shook his head.
"Books?" Duo quirked an eyebrow and smirked. "I'm Duo. Duo Maxwell." He held out a hand to her in greeting.
Meiran took his hand and shook it. "Pleasure to meet you Duo. So, how do you know my bookworm of a husband?" she asked.
"From being a Gundam pilot with him," he said.
Treize walked towards the hangar. Zechs had come to him and made mention of the Tallgeese and it's lack of maintenance. While Treize knew the others were looking after it once in a while, he also knew they were concentrating on their own machines.
Wufei looked up when the older man entered, keeping an ear trained on Maxwell and his wife.
"I was surprised when he took over piloting Nataku."
Knowing he couldn't expect them to look after it for him all the time, he went to take a look for himself. He paused when he spotted the others in there. Treize inwardly sighed, debating letting them be.
"Oh? You mean, you were the original pilot?" Duo asked her.
"Yep." she replied before glancing over to Treize.
Duo looked over that way, too.
Wufei wasn't quite sure he wanted the former officer near his wife, but he had little say in the matter.
So much for an unnoticed retreat... Treize gave them each a small smile and nod. "Good afternoon," he said.
"Treize," he said with a nod.
"Good afternoon!" Meiran called cheerfully.
Duo gave a small wave. This was going to be awkward once Meiran realized who he was.
"I hope I'm not intruding," Treize said, remaining near the door in case they wanted to shoo him away.
"It's a hangar." Meiran replied, "It's free space."
Treize nodded. "I take it you're new here, Miss..."
"Chang Meiran," Wufei said before she could hit him again.
"I'm married to this idiot." She said, but took Wufei's hand into her own.
He smiled, entwining their fingers.
Treize quirked a forked eyebrow at them in surprise. "I never knew," he said, giving them a small smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you." He gave her a small bow. "I am Treize Khushrenada."
And Duo waited for the fecal matter to hit the air circulation device.
"I would like to inform you Mr. Khushrenada, my husband's beef with you is his own. In no way am I affected or do I care. He's always been headstrong and a bit stubborn."
Wufei snorted. If Meiran had been watching over him during the war as she'd said, she'd have seen exactly what had happened. Otherwise he suspected the encounter would have been more violent.
Treize nodded. "Thank you." While Treize didn't know what the significance was entirely, he appreciated her candor.
'Crisis averted,' Duo thought, giving a low whistle and looking off towards Deathscythe.
She grinned and then smacked Wufei with her free hand. "Seriously, the war's been over for how long and you're still carting around grudges?"
He grabbed her hand, lowering it. "I have my reasons, Nataku."
"So!" Duo said, walking over and breaking the awkward moment as always. "What do you like to do other than the beat the crap outta your husband?"
Treize coughed slightly at Duo's crass speech and politely excused himself, continuing towards Tallgeese.
"Work on the mobile suits."
"Funny though, since I remember winning our last spar."
"No one asked you Wuffers."
Wufei twitched at the nickname.
Duo grinned almost maniacally. "See? People like that name for you. I still say you should use it."
She preened.
He sighed. He should have known.
Meiran grinned
Duo grinned as well. "C'mon... you know it."
"No, Maxwell, just no."
"Call him Shu Daizi one of these days."
Head whipping around to stare at her, Wufei covered her mouth. "Don't you dare."
"Shu Daizi? What's that mean?" Duo asked.
She licked his palm before kicking his shin, hard.
He jumped back, wiping his hand on his pants. "That's disgusting."
Duo backed up so he wouldn't get hit by accident.
"You don't complain when I do that other places." She smirked before looking at Duo, "It means bookworm in Chinese."
Wufei went red.
"And that's embarrassing?" Duo chuckled. "I'll keep it in mind."
She laughed and kissed his cheek.
He smiled a little at her despite his embarrassment.
Duo smirked. Yup... there it was. "Cute," he said.
"Shut up Maxwell."
She looked at Duo. "Did you torment him during the war?"
"Hell yeah," he said, grinning. "And it was damn fun to watch him get all huffy every time I did."
"I don't get huffy," Wufei said, shooting him a look while he tried to ignore the feeling of doom growing in his gut.
"Yes you do Wuchangles dear."
Duo snorted, and then started laughing.
He palmed his forehead with a groan.
Meiran grinned.
"He really hates Wu-Wu, too," Duo told her.
"What about Waffles?"
"Yes, I do hate them," Wufei growled.
"I dunno... I happen to like waffles... especially with fruit and powdered sugar... or ice cream..." Duo grinned.
"Oooo... I might have to borrow that idea."
He took hold of her arm, trying to get her away from Duo before things could deteriorate further.
Duo smiled.
"What's the matter, Wufie?" Duo asked.
"I think he's cursing the moment we met."
"Indefinitely."
Duo laughed.
"I think I should go with him before he has a coronary."
"I'm surprised he hasn't had about eight of 'em by now," Duo said with a good laugh.
"I've built up a tolerance around you," Wufei said dryly.
Meiran winked at Duo. "I'll defiantly be seeing you around hot stuff." She grinned.
Duo laughed a bit. "Don't let my girlfriend hear you call me that."
"Or your husband," he added, eyeing her.
Meiran gave a gentle shrug. "I'd never leave you Wufei, ever." she whispered seriously.
"I know."
She smiled at Duo. "It was nice meeting you Duo. But, I think Wufei here has plans now that he's gotten over his initial shock."
"Alright... don't have too much fun," he said. "It might be bad for Wuffer's health."
Wufei shook his head, giving a parting nod to Duo as he dragged his wife away.
Meiran went willing with Wufei.
Duo smiled a bit at them over his shoulder as they left.
