Camera recommendations.

I have started looking for a new digital camera, an SLR. I started by looking at the Nikon D50, but then realized that I actually liked the features of the D70 instead. On further review I have decided to at least look at the Canon 20D or 30D.

I am looking for help here people! Any recommendations, or opinions are welcome.

You can probably get a good deal on the Canon 20D, since it has been replaced by the 30D. There's not a huge difference in features between the two. I'm a huge Canon fan. I've got a Canon PowerShot S2 IS, and love it! Do you have a 35mm SLR already?

I do not have any SLR right now, but used to use one. I have no strong brand preference and no legacy equipment. I have a friend who is a big Canon fan, and he said for the money the Nikon D70 is the way to go, but if you were looking for anything higher to look for Canon. I talked to a Nikon guy who said the exact same thing.

I think my decision now comes down to what I want to spend, do I go cheap now and regret later, or buy to future-proof. Once I make a selection on this it will stick long term, if I buy Nikon I'll start buying Nikon lenses want to upgrade camera bodies to keep using the lenses.

Yeah, ultimately it always comes down to what you want to spend. My wife has a nice Minolta 35mm SLR, but it wasn't compatible with any of their Digital SLRs, which they've since sold off to Sony. I think when it comes time to buy a SLR though, I'll stick with Canon. I've really liked my last 2 Canons Point & Shoots.

My brother worked for Minolta about 8 months ago, when they stopped selling the cameras in Canada, apparently that was the start of the end. The guy I know who bought Nikon said that when Nikon developed thier digital SLR line they did it so the the 35 mm lenses would work on the digital. Apparently Canon abandoned the film world and went totally new on digital, which meant that they had the flexability to use a larger CCD and a larger lense opening.

I cashed in like four years of American Express points a couple of years ago and got a D70. It is an absolutely fantastic camera. I think the picture quality is right up there with my film Nikon.

Just the thing for snapping pics in Vegas. :)

I got a EOS Rebel XT just a couple of months ago and have really been enjoying it. It is my first SLR, so there is a bit of a learning curve, but I am learning! The only thing I do not like is that you cannot view the picture on the screen before you take it, only through the viewfinder. I am so used to digital cameras with that feature I just assumed it would be that way.
