I was enlisted into NS in 1987. Yes, before some of you were even concieved. Back then, we had a Commanding Officer who was feared by everyone..... well, almost everyone.
He was nice to the NS boys, but strict and regimental towards the officers and senior NCOs (or i think the correct term nowadays would be Specialists).
CO was promoted to full Colonel in 1989 and soon after got posted out to assume a higher post. I still recall on my last week of service, I followed my unit's transport to his new camp and managed to sit down with him for 10min..... to say goodbye. And yes, he was that nice to sit down with us for a chat.
I kept good memories of my CO. Despite hearing people talk bad about him. I did not know what they meant. Even my Branch Head, whom I bumped into 6 months ago, started talking bad about him and said if ever they bump into each other, he will acknowledge, but will not sit down to talk.
Anyway, CO left the service and held a couple of private sector appointments, he later opened his own business. He bumped into my former Chief Clerk and mooted the idea of a reunion.
Tonight.
Back then, in 1980's, we haven't got our mobile phone as the defacto tool for communication. So it was extremely difficult for Chief to organise. She had to sought the help of people who knew people who knew people to gather as many participants as possible. I still keep in touch with Chief cos she is my paternal cousin :x
While searching for participants, some people have disappeared completely..... while some refused to attend because of CO.
Anyways, I am going, and i do feel a bit apprehensive, meeting many of my NS friends, former WO's and Staff's and Sgt's after 2 decades. Hopefully I can remember most of their names.
