Dull drills and titanium sheet

So. Did you know that if you have a piece of titanium sheet, and you want to drill a hole in it, and the drill you choose is a bit on the dull side, and you don't use any lubricant because hey, it's only 1/16 inch thick so how hard can it be, and you put it in the drill press and keep bearing down on it figuring that it will have to go through * ( Read more... )

Was the burned-through hole still within the size range that you needed for your purposes?

Yes, it was. It actually only had two problems: (1) I had to file down the back side of the hole to remove the metal that had melted and resolidified, and (2) I'm pretty sure it finished destroying the drill bit.

*giggle* This is where you lick your paw & say "I meant to do that". Glad it worked so well... and as far as destroying the drill bit goes, you said it was dull, so maybe this you needed this nudge... :-)
