Dungeons & Dragons (and R.O.U.S.'s...)!

As you probably know if you've been following my facebook statuses, Marcus and I hosted an RPG night at our apartment Saturday night! I've sort of always wanted to try an RPG (which, by the way, stands for Role Playing Game, for those who don't know), but I never had any close friends who played them regularly, so I never had the opportunity. Well, a couple of months ago, we were at IHOP with a group of people, and decided that since several of our friends are involved in regular RPGs, that we should do one. Our friend Elisabeth was our DM (basically the person in charge of the game, she created our "quest" and had all the obstacles and such planned out ahead of time). We played Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), the latest version, which I believe is 4.0. Elisabeth is more familiar with version 3.5, but since 4.0 is apparently simpler, she decided that we should use that one. So, at 7 pm on Saturday, we gathered for our first RPG session! It ended up being just me, Marcus, Elisabeth, Cliff, and Joel (although several others were invited, they couldn't make it), which ended up being a good size group.

We started by creating our characters. It's a very long and in-depth process! 3 hours later, we had finally settled on this motley crew:
Cliff as Droffilc (Clifford spelled backwards, LOL), a Tiefling Rogue;
Joel as Luthel (the joint name of his pet rats, haha), a Half-Elf Warlord;
Marcus as Tarvus (Tarcus with a v?), an Eladrin Wizard;
and me as Maielea, an Eladrin Ranger.

We set out on our quest, to recover a scroll from an ancient temple overrun with goblins! We only got in about an hour of playing time before Joel had to leave, but in that time, we managed to make it into the temple, through the first room of obstacles, and down some stairs into the second room, where we encountered four giant rats (who luckily were sleeping!)! My comment was, "wow...apparently Rodents of Unusual Size DO exist!", which garnered many laughs and the approval of Elisabeth, as apparently one of the "rules" of D&D is that you have to insert as many geeky movie quotes as possible! lol ;)

After Joel left, Marcus and Cliff worked together to play his character in addition to each still playing their own. We managed to attack and defeat all four rats by midnight, when Elisabeth had to leave. We are still in the planning stages for our next session, but I think it's safe to say that we're hooked! I for one can't wait to see what other obstacles Elisabeth has in store for us!

All in all, it was a great evening full of fun, friends, and food! I kind of wish I had gotten into RPGs earlier, but I guess it's better late than never! My inner closet supergeek is finally satisfied, and hungry for more! I'm so glad I have awesome friends who allow me to let that supergeek out and embrace that side of myself :)

rpgs, friends
