World Tour 2009 - Day 3

Nov 24, 2009 17:30

To those of you that have no interest in my world tour... tough. I'm trying to put together a quick blog so I can remember it later on. You can just ignore me. Those of you reading... I hope that you are enjoying my bullet points of my trip.

Today's Highlights:
  • Slept late. Really didn't think the not bringing a watch or an alarm clock through. Well, honestly, it was such a hectic week that I didn't really even think to put them on the list. They were more of a forgotten item than me not thinking it through.
  • Went in search of an ATM when we got up; seein' as we had no Euros. Instead, we ended up at a cafe. We apparently smell American from 500 yards because the waiter immediately switched to English when we entered. I'm sure my obnoxious red coat doesn't help. I had roasted duck over chips, and awl had some huge omelette that came with a salad and fries.
  • After brunch, we went out to the Eiffel Tower. I will say that my heart sank a little as I approached. So many pan handlers and homeless... the city was a little dirty... I kept thinking "did I build it up too much in my head?" Took a billion photos anyway.
  • Found the ATM for the BoA partner here in France, and loaded up on cash for the on/off bus. Really, on/off buses are terribly touristy, but they really help you get your bearings in unfamiliar cities. I recommend them for the first day of a trip to get a good idea of what to do and where to go.
  • Road around for two hours, and I'm so glad we did. My initial impression this morning was wiped clean. It is the most beautiful city in the world, and even awl has admitted that he really is afraid I'll not come home.
  • Came back for a nap, and then dinner downstairs at the local cafe got handed the English menu again: ham, cheese, tomato, and egg crepe for me, and pasta with mushroom cream sauce for him. The most delightful part of my meal was the Limonade. I've had it in the States, but there are far more varieties than what Harry's has back home.
  • Came back to the hotel at 8 or so, and vegged. We stopped at the SupreMarche for some "la glace" and profiteroles... oh, and yes, Limonade. Really, I'll be ordering this stuff from Publix when I get back home. It's like sparkling lemon/lime water, but better. We sat around in our jammies while I've been uploading photos and watching bad American movies all in French.
Best moment of the day: Walking hand in hand, in the dark, through the park alongside the Seine. Looking up, with a little bit of breath in the air, and seeing the Eiffel Tower lit up and glittering.
