I love being a music major! Yeah it's 12:30 and I've been going pretty constant since I woke up at 8 am today, but you have to figure the hardest thing I had to do all day was conduct part of Brahms's German Requiem. It kicked my ass, but it was supposed to. I would have been sort of worried if it had been easy. Other than that I went to my recording lab instead of jazz band rehearsal. It was kind of interesting. It was the first time that I've gotten to sit down in the control room upstairs and actually use the equipment. Recording is the only reason I kind of want a laptop. I'm thinking about saving up 500 bucks over the summer and getting an el cheapo laptop. Then, as I start putting a bit more money away I would like to buy some mics and of course an interface for the computer.
Anyways, after classes I realized that I was behind on my homework...like, way fuckin behind. But no worries, for I am a music major, and therefore, way fuckin behind really means one nights worth of just pounding away and EVERYTHING. I recorded patterns for improv class tomorrow, 4 patterns in all 12 keys! Yep thats 48 separate tracks in about an hour. Then i started and finished my recording midterm thats due tomorrow. I also went to the library, and this is what made me realize how much I love being a music major. Most people go to the library and check out some seriously scholarly work on some really in depth subject. All I do is check out CD's. Tonight however I went and checked out a real live book! Well sort of. The "book" is Beethoven's 9 Symphonies in mini-score. I have to have a copy of the 9th symphony for my theory class tomorrow and the only copy left on the shelf was this thick book that includes not just the 9th, but complete scores of the first nine symphonies! The only other real books that I have checked out of the library are my Brass Techniques textbook and a really tiny book on Paganism in Lithuanian. Don't worry, I checked it out for a paper that I was writing on Stravinsky :-)
So I stressed out for about 3 hours tonight and got a lot of shit done. It will make tomorrow much less stressful than it could have been. I do need to start my stupid Bob Brookmeyer transcription tomorrow, it's due on Thursday! Yikes! In other words, you will definitely see me in the con late on Wednesday night finishing it up.
Yay we get to start trombone in brass tech tomorrow! but we only get to do it for 2 weeks, bummer. We got 3 weeks of horn and 2 and a half of trumpet. But oh well, doing trombone means that I can skip out early and actually go to jazz improv on time! That will make Lee happy! Which is good because I got a sarcastic email from him a few days ago when i didn't go to class.
Ok, and to continue my music euphoria of the day, I am going to finish listening to the last movement of Bruckner's 8th Symphony. Yeah, I get to write a 10 page paper comparing several performances of this piece, so I pretty much "have" to listen to it all the time. The joy of my major means that I "have" to listen to a piece that I really enjoy!
Oh yeah, almost forgot, I got to perform WWII era swing music for a bunch of old people yesterday! We each got paid 50 bucks for doing it which is sweet, but I would have done the gig for free, it was so much fun. Those people know the words to songs that I didn't even know have words!
Two concerts this weekend! You should be at both of them unless your name is Felicia in which case I won't expect to see you at either one of them because you are a work-a-holic. Good luck getting a car! I've got ur back if you ever want me to hide your own money from you haha.
Ok movement is almost over, and I'm now getting tired, so time to go move my car and then go to bed. Waking up tomorrow for Brass Techniques! yay trombone! yay Nick!!!! yay going to jazz improv on time! yay being caught up in theory! yay finishing my recording midterm on time! I love being a music major!!!!!!!!!!
PS a friend of mine described this picture as Visual Jazz!! I love it!
