Ah, finally! The inaugural post of the newer, better, bigger and brighter challenges, as outlined in some of your comments
here. (If anyone has any suggestions, by the by, for future challenges, please email me!)
Challenge number 22 is Lyrics (a re-visioning of an old challenge community standby). I want to maintain a sense of freedom of interpretation for these challenges while simultaneously providing some structure for those who need/want it (for an amusing reading of this disclaimer, see
joran's comment
here). So, you have two choices in responding to this particular challenge:
1) Pick your own song (and please tell us when you post the story what song(s) inspired you) and write a story that in some way reflects the lyrics of this song; whether you actually use the lyrics in the story (as a heading or line of dialogue or first/last line) or just rely on them for inspiration is entirely up to you.
2) Choose a set of lyrics from one of the two options below (I've posted only a few lines, but with links to the entire song) and write a story using those lyrics as inspiration.
Semisonic, "Act Naturally" (full lyrics
here):
Our little secret just might be the kind of thing that you can’t hide
It’s growing like a tangled vine & rising like a river in the tide
And everybody knew when you walked into the room
I was just a fool for you, nothing I could do
or
Dar Williams, "Beauty of the Rain" (full lyrics
here):
And there's nothing wrong, but there is something more
And sometimes you wonder what you love her for
She says you've known her deepest fears
Cause she's shown you a box of stained-glass tears
It can't be all, the truth about the rain
is how it falls, how it falls, how it falls
Post stories on or before Friday, March 10th! And, as always, multiple submissions are more than welcome. Now, ready? Set. Write.
