Happy Birthday, Claire
Claire wished that she could say she was surprised.
But of course she wasn’t.
“Happy birthday,” said John, shifting on the bed so that he could prop himself up on one elbow. He was lying on his side facing the door, completely naked except for an old red scarf that he’d tied around his neck to look like a bow. Claire wanted to wipe the smug smile off of his face, but after two years she’d learned it was permanent.
“John, we have company!” she hissed, just as someone came up from behind her.
“Darling, our reservation is for seven. If we don’t leave now, we’ll--oh, my god!”
John grinned and shifted his legs to give both women a better view. “Hi, Mrs. Standish.”
