A/N: Started this May 23, 2010. Finished one year, two months, and 14 days later. Woot. Truth be told, I'm not very happy about this fic because I think I ended it way too fast. :P I hope that's just me being tired and pessimistic.
Penny sat cross-legged on the couch, digging her spoon into the tub of ice cream she was holding. She sniffled, wiping her eyes with the crumpled tissue in her hands as she shoved another spoonful of ice cream into her mouth.
“Good night. I’ll be seeing you.”
Penny let out another sob as the final scene came to a close and the credits began to roll. Just as she was turning off the TV, that familiar knocking came to her door.
*knock* *knock* *knock*
“Penny.”
*knock* *knock* *knock*
“Penny.”
*knock* *knock* *knock*
“Penny.”
“Just a second!” she said to the door as she quickly wiped her eyes and closed the container of ice cream. She leaped off the couch and opened the door.
“Good evening, Penny.”
“Hi, Sheldon. What’s up?”
Sheldon blinked a few times before speaking again. “Penny, have you been crying?”
She wiped her eyes again. “Yes, Sheldon.”
“Why?”
“Because Duke and Allie died.” Penny sniffled and wiped away another tear.
Sheldon opened his mouth to ask another question, but decided it was best to leave Penny to her odd, imaginative tragedies. Instead, he changed the subject to his news.
“Leonard just gave me a call.”
Penny gasped in excitement, “Is he coming home?”
“Not yet.”
She groaned, leaning against the door. “But he’s been gone for so long! How long is this trip supposed to last? I miss him.”
“Possibly another two weeks. He told me that I should inform you.”
Penny thought for a second, scrunching her eyebrows in confusion. “Wait. Why did he call you and not me?”
Sheldon flinched and began to twitch uncontrollably. “Good night, Penny.”
She stared at him as he ran back into his apartment and slammed the door. What the hell was that? She closed the door, suspicious about what was going on. Penny walked into her bedroom and grabbed her cell phone off the nightstand. Still confused (and admittedly, a little scared) about what was going on, she pressed speed dial one and waited for Leonard to pick up. Two rings later, his voice came over the phone.
“Hey, Penny.”
“Leonard, where are you?”
“You know where I am. I’m in New York.”
“Okay, then why did you call Sheldon about your trip and not me?”
Leonard panicked, attempting to think of a reasonable answer. “Um, you didn’t pick up?”
Penny sighed in relief, not sensing Leonard’s uneasiness over the phone. “Oh, okay. I thought something was up.”
“No, no. No, nothing’s up. Nothing at all. Everything’s fine, absolutely fine.” Leonard responded, drawing out the last two words far more than he should have.
Penny giggled. “O-kay. Got it. Everything’s fine.”
“Uh, listen, Penny, I’ve gotta go. I’m kinda busy right now.”
“Oh! Yeah. Of course. So I guess I’ll see you in two weeks, honey.”
-----
Penny decided, at a little past midnight, that it was time to sleep. She crawled into bed and pulled the covers up to her chin, wrapping her arms around Leonard’s pillow. She took in the smell of him that still lingered on the pillow and sighed contentedly. Two more weeks. She couldn’t wait to see Leonard again. As thoughts of him continued to linger on her mind, it didn’t take long for her to fall into a comfortably sound sleep.
*knock* *knock* *knock*
“Penny.”
*knock* *knock* *knock*
“Penny.”
*knock* *knock* *knock*
“Penny.”
She groaned, turning over and glancing at the clock. 1 A.M. I’m going to kill him.
“Go away, Sheldon!”
*knock* *knock* *knock*
“Penny.”
*knock* *knock* *knock*
“Penny.”
*knock* *knock* *knock*
“Penny.”
“Sheldon, if you don’t go away, I swear to God, I’m going to punch your nose right off your face!”
There was a long silence from outside the apartment before Sheldon cautiously spoke again.
“Penny, I need you to come out here.”
“Why?!”
“I um…I heard a noise.”
She sighed, unwilling to leave the bed, but got up anyway. As she trudged toward the door, she thought she felt different for some reason, but in her sleep-deprived state, could not figure out what it was, and couldn’t care less either. She turned on the light and opened the door to find Sheldon standing in the hallway in his pajamas, and it looked like he was still twitching uncontrollably.
“You want to sleep on the couch?”
“No. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”
She glared at him, about to say something, but she didn’t want to deal with Sheldon asking if it was sarcasm. Not at one in the morning, anyway.
Penny stepped to the side. “Come on in.” Sheldon nervously stepped into her apartment, which made the situation even weirder. “What’s going on with you, Sheldon?”
He looked away from her. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yes you do. You’ve had more nervous tics than a Lyme disease research facility ever since I asked about Leonard.”
“No, I haven’t.” Sheldon cleared his throat, sensing the need to speed things along. “Penny, will you hand me that magazine?”
“What? Why?”
“I just want to see it.”
Penny stared at him. “…You want to see Cosmopolitan?”
“Yes.” She continued to stare at him incredulously. “Just hand it to me, Penny.”
She sighed, grabbing the magazine off the coffee table. “I don’t know what you could possibly want with this, but here.” As she raised her arm to hand him the magazine, something caught her eye. She squinted and turned her hand to get a better view. Once she figured out what it was, her heart jumped into her throat and she dropped the magazine. A gold diamond ring was on her finger, glistening beautifully in the light. Sheldon grinned, partly happy that he didn’t have to lie anymore.
“Turn around,” said Sheldon.
Penny quickly twirled around, only to find Leonard standing in the doorway, holding a bundle of roses. He was dressed neatly in a suit, and his smile was bright and cheery. Penny gasped and giggled with joy as Leonard walked into the room. He handed her the flowers and held her hand as he got down on one knee.
“Penny, the moment I laid eyes on you four years ago, you stole my heart. Since then, you’ve become my life. You make me smile, you make me laugh, and most of all, you make me feel important. You are the most beautiful, caring woman I have ever met, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Penny, will you marry me?”
By the time he was finished speaking, Penny was jumping frantically and screaming, flailing her arms in the air.
“YES! Yes, I will!”
She jumped into his arms as he stood up and she wrapped her legs around his waist. Sheldon stood to the side awkwardly, but couldn’t help smiling at the romantic sight in front of him.
Penny was nearly out of control, giggling and squealing and crying and jumping, her arms still wrapped around Leonard. Once he got her to calm down, she turned to Sheldon and pointed at him.
“Sheldon! I can’t believe you were in it the whole time!”
“I can’t believe you managed to not ruin the whole thing,” Leonard quipped.
“Well, what are best friends for? I believe I should say congratulations to the both of you. And I will leave you alone now.”
Leonard nodded and gave him a big smile. “Thanks, Sheldon.” He gave them a small nod and left.
When Leonard turned back to Penny, she was grinning and staring at her ring.
“Do you like it?”
Penny looked up at her new fiancé. “I love it. And I love you.”
