10 years ago an incredibly cute little ball of fluff made eyes at me in a pet shop that completely melted me and had me parting with a rather large sum of money very quickly and without thinking.
She was so tiny 600 grams in fact, she used to climb up and sleep on my shoulder tucked behind my ear and under my hair.
Very quickly she established her part in our family and became very well loved by all of us. She was smart, funny and so entertaining. She always knew when we needed a cuddle and was happy to oblige.
Her favourite toys were empty toilet rolls and she would almost run through the toilet door as she heard us tearing the last sheet from the roll. They would keep her entertained for hours. Even now, as my tears are flowing, I can see one sitting on my bedroom floor where she was last playing with it. She liked to hide them so she could come back to them later or find them in the morning and jump up to greet me when I woke up with one in her mouth so I could throw it for her. Of course she always feigned a battle with me over the toilet roll, I knew she would let me win because she loved to play fetch with them.
Yesterday as I drove home from work, I received a call to say meet us at the vet a neighbour had driven my daughter to the local vet with Lulu wrapped in a towel, she had basically "collapsed" my daughter was holding her and she had barely moved. When I walked into the consulting room she still managed to lift her head to greet me with that familiar "Mummys home" face although it was slightly etched with worry and maybe some pain.
The local vet advised we urgently get her to the local 24hr vet hospital for urgent attention and overnight observation so we bundled her into our car and took her to the Balcatta clinic.
They knew we were coming and immediately took her from Sasha and rushed her out the back for treatment. After some time Sash and I went back to see her, the vet advised that she had been very close to death and was very dehydrated. It appeared that she was suffering from major liver problems and had suffered some kidney damage.
We waited some time and my husband came to join us after a while. The vet came back and took us out to see her and she was like the old Lulu again standing up wagging her tail and very happy to see us. She was on a fluid drip and had had some pain killers.
She licked our faces and climbed up on us wanting to come home, but the vet advised she was not out of the woods and would need a lot more treatment and was still very much touch and go. As we left she gave Sash and I a really sad look, I had a feeling at the time that I might not see her again. I wanted to bundle her up and take her home with us but knew she was where she needed to be. Going to sleep without her laying at my feet last night was hard and I missed her terribly.
This morning I was to call and find out what time I would need to take her for an ultrasound, so I called at 8:20am to find out how she was and what time the appt was for.
The receptionist went off to speak to the vet and came back to tell me that they were still doing rounds and hadn't assessed Lulu just yet and the ultrasound clinic wasn't yet opened so they hadn't been able to book a time.
10 minutes later the vet called me back. The real reason no time had been booked was that during their morning examination Lulu, who had been stable most of the night, had started to vomit and went into cardiac arrest. They were trying to keep her alive and had administered adrenalin and were attempting to revive her she advised we get there as quickly as possible as she was in a very critical condition.
We all got in the car in record time and raced to the vet however she had passed away. We went to see her and gave her big cuddles, I swear I could feel her cold nose on my neck and hear her breathing in my ear.
We all miss her terribly and wish there was a way we could bring her back. RIP Lulu the best little friend a person could have, we miss you.
