What do we do when well meaning, church going people are dead set against us. What can we do when friends and family buy into the propaganda and vote to protect children and their "religious rights" over our right to love whomever we chose?
Like many people I was raised going to church and being very involved in church activities and I understand all to well the lock-step mentatlity of following everything you are told to do and believe. Abortion was the big thing back in the early 90s before they latched onto the defeating the "gay agenda"
There is little personal thought nor any kind of logical follow-thru for these kind of social decisions, everything is an attack on THEIR beliefs, everything is a battle for God that must be won (sound familiar, Crusades anyone??!!)
I'd like to think that if being gay didn't break me out of that mold and teach me to think for myself I would have anyways, but who knows now.
Understanding that - I hear and know where they are coming from, but apart from them having their own awakening because their son or daughter or someone close tells them they are gay and forces them to think of homosexuals as people and not the enemy, I have no clue how to approach this to convince them otherwise short of being visible, making our voices heard, and making sure our representatives at the State and National levels know where we stand.
Michaelangelo Signorile hit it on the head yesterday on his show, this is why we DON'T live in a pure democracy, but a government by representation. It's designed that way so that minority groups are not stomped on and government can do the RIGHT thing even IF the majority doesn't like it. Just like what has been done with civil rights for over a century.
This isn't the end. It woke some people up and it's about time. Our community needed a kick our of our collective complacency.
