Why I Hate Recruiters/Contracting companies

So I'm in the job search - and unfortuantely few large companies hire directly for higher technical positions anymore - they rely on these recruiters and contracting companies to find placements either as a direct hire, contract to hire or just as a timed contract position with the "lure" of eventually becoming a full time employee.

One of my first contacts is from a recruiter from a contracting company that has a 6 month contract position out at American Express in their Establishment Services division for a SQL Server data analyst.

In 1994 I left AMEX after almost five years - long story for another post, but I was making a change to my life.  I worked in Establishment Services and I still know at least one person there.  And since I do have good experience working with the requirements in the posting I think I have a good chance.

And hopefully, fingers crossed, a chance to get past the contract and get back into AMEX fulltime.  They pay is not bad and they are pretty close to home.

BUT - after not hearing anything for a few days I contact the contractor and I hear that the position is no longer available.

Now - sidetrack - I had checked the AMEX website and saw the contract position online, BUT . . . . the AMEX website says they exclusively use a contractor called ZeroChaos - the company that contacted me was NOT ZeroChaos.  I asked the guy if they were affiliated, he tells me that he's never heard of them and they place people with AMEX all the time.  His emails even started to get a bit defensive.

So - next day after being told the position was closed, I checked the AMEX website again, the position was still there so I posted for it directly thru ZeroChaos.  I'm getting communication from them, they are not saying the position was closed.  I don't know if I will hit the same brick wall - but I'm either going to find out the first company was misrepresenting themselves - or if this position really is closed that this "exclusive" company doesn't know anything either.

I really really hate this process.
