Beautiful dreamer

Consider:
Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,
Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee;
Sounds of the rude world, heard in the day,
Lull'd by the moonlight have all pass'd away!
Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
List while I woo thee with soft melody;
Gone are the cares of life's busy throng,
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Or:

In the eye abides the heart,
Every pure and tender feeling.

Yes, I am listening to the Songs of Stephen Foster.

The past is a different country, not just because they do things differently there but because they feel things differently there. One of the pleasures of dipping into a 19th century canon may be the opportunity to try writing men who express emotion without ducking behind Great Depression Stoicism or Post-Modern Irony.
