Gotcha. I've never done it manually so no idea why it would remove a subscription automatically if you add someone as a friend. That might be a bug report to send; I do send them bug reports when I come across things like that, and they are pretty responsive! It seems to be a small crew running this site.
My problem with DW is that embedding media in posts is absolutely unintuitive and impossible most of the time. Then when I report that I can't embed ANY video, despite there being a, you know, EMBED VIDEO option, I get a huffy, "We're a small crew running this site, we don't have time to fix that!" response. Soooo yeah, LJ has problems too but at least I know they continue to TRY. That, and I'm still lowkey disgusted that so many of my Boomer/Cold War LJ friends moved to DW because of the war in Ukraine, as a boycott. As if normal Russian citizens have ANYTHING to do with their dictator's politics or decisions. Personally I find it racist and gross. That'd be like someone turning their back on me because Trump was president, without having even asked if I support him (absolutely not.) But anyway.
I'm pretty sure they read my blog (LJ staff.) I've seen a few others who post regularly, and get a moderate amount of traffic, get comments from two accounts that I'm pretty sure are LJ admins, and mine does now too (it's a fairly new thing for me.) I think that might mean they are more responsive if I send them a support issue? Who knows.
RE: Russian ownership of LJ: Boomers were conditioned. That's all it is. Parents condition their children to hate POC, or teach them that gay people are to be reviled, OR that Russia is evil, and because Americans are largely idiots who never leave their shitty closed-minded hometowns, they believe these things to be true for their entire lives. It's sad and frustrating and grosses me out. When the war in Ukraine started two people that I talk regularly to here, who otherwise seem sane and kind people, suddenly proclaimed, "I'm moving to DW because this site is run by RUSSIANS." Like...wtf? What has anyone running LJ ever done, to invoke discrimination like that? Be born in a country whose government makes shitty decisions? News flash, our country is NOT any better, we just kill citizens of other countries rather than our own. Didn't we learn anything from 9/11? How many people who died in the Twin Towers had anything to do with warfare in the Middle East?
Anyway, I hate politics and talking politics but this was something that shocked and angered me, to find out my boomer friends on LJ were essentially racist (yes, boycotting Russian things and people entirely because they are Russian, is racist.) My dad was the same way: he would only buy "American" car brands (Chevy, Dodge, Chrysler.) He went through three cars/vans in the span of time that I owned ONE Toyota Corolla. Would rather be racist and wrong than open his mind up and benefit from all the GREAT things about other people, countries, cultures, and economies out there. It blows my mind.
Ok enough haha. Regarding what you said about continuing to post pro-LGBTQIA+ content on LJ...isn't it awesome that LJ ALLOWS you to post that content!! They don't try to block or censor you because their government disapproves. I think that says something about the human beings behind the site, whatever their ethnicity.
