to Lake Charles, LA, (little Bessie girl that I once knew)

Sep 20, 2006 16:14

I leave tomorrow for the Texas border. I'm visiting four prisoners in three jails, and as I'm mostly ignorant of their cases, my legal work will be minimal. My biggest jobs will be to keep conversations going and to make sure I buy the right can of Coke from the vending machine.

I've been looking forward to travelling out through Cajun country since I got here. I can't wait to get out of town. This is exactly why I signed up for this job.

Two things keep popping through my head:

1) I remember reading an interview with Steve Young, former Niners QB, when I was about twelve years old. He was asked what made him happiest, and he replied, "An open road, my car, and a full tank of gas." Or, Ben Folds- "It seems like all men want to get into a car and go anywhere." I asked the rental car agency for a stick-shift.

2) St Anselm refused to have gold in his church as long as there was a prisoner in jail who could be ransomed. He's my honorary protector for this trip.

At Mass the reading was St. Paul's discourse on love ("if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing"). Lake Charles tomorrow night, and back to New Orleans late Friday. The beautiful girl steps off a flight from Dallas next Wednesday night. It's almost time.
