I remember the first time I met him. It was October of 1998. I was in my second year of college. He was starting a six month internship with Pixar. I was sitting on the couch that surrounded the little coffee table in front of the fire. It was cold outside, and we were all dressed in reflection of the breezy fall evening. FHE was just about to begin when he walked through those doors. He was new, but he caught all the girls eyes. Even mine. He smiled his quirky smile and sat in the back with the other guys, as we learned the gospel lesson. I remembering his jeans hugging his long legs, and his t-shirt fit just right. He was cute, awkward in a way. But he reminded you of a charming Clark Kent.
It was eight-thirty when he decided he needed to head home early. I decided the same. We walked down to the bottom floor of the parking structure. We stopped and talked for a second, it started with, "What's your last name Nick?". He answered, I confirmed the spelling, and our conversation went from there. He was from Texas, was a skier and studied animation. He was 27 years old about to turn 28. And starting an internship at the dream of all dream animation companies. I was instantly crushing. But I knew it was far fetched, so I moved on. We continued our conversation, and the next moment we noticed it was 11:30pm. We had been talking for 3 hours. Letting the time fly by. It was unbelievable. But I never thought after that moment, our paths would not cross again until Christmas.
