I continue to be astonished and delighted by what technology has brought to even the humblest areas of life.
I know I have no business boring anyone with more trivia about my recent adventure but I did put this behind the cut with a warning label, as it were.
Instead of stitches and bulky dressings, the incision for the implantation of the pacemaker was sealed and covered by a thin, transparent membrane-like material which is designed to dissolve as it is no longer needed. This is truly the stuff of science fiction. I have the image of Bones using something of the sort to tend the wounds of crew members on the Enterprise. I went to the clinic yesterday, expecting to have the dressing removed only to be told that most of it had already dissolved and that gentle applications of mild soap and warm water in the shower would gradually take care of the rest. I had not noticed because the incision is in a location which is difficult for me to observe directly and I am not accustomed to looking in mirrors. I felt very foolish when I was informed of the conditions of my own body. Still, this technique is a minor miracle and saves much discomfort and time. For that I am grateful.
