A Note to an Officer

Jan 27, 2006 22:11

Dear Officer Wincott:

When you met me for the first time, you told me your son, Sam, was captured by trolls. I thought it was odd that you started blabbing about your personal life to a complete stranger like me, but I figured, if I had a kid and he was kidnapped, it would be all I ever talked about also. Other people's kids were captured by trolls too but your kid was apparently more important than their kids.

I thought you would tell me to go save your son one day, but no, you shoved me off to a coworker like I was yesterday's news. Alright, whatever, I can take it. Soon I was getting more troll missions. Fun to kick troll ass, oh yes. I got a badge for defeating Frostfire FIVE TIMES. That looks good on my hero-resume.

During these missions, I have been finding pages of someone's diary. This person is apparently important to the trolls, he keeps getting moved around. His diary is about his dreams and about rock creatures and so on. It all seemed pretty surreal untl I actually met some rock creatures. Then I thought, hey, this guy's important, I gotta look out for him.

WELL OFFICER WINCOTT. I finally found the remainder of the diary. And it's signed "Sam Wincott."

Such joy I felt! I ran to my contact, who said you'd be delighted. I then rushed to you to tell you the good news. ...AND YOU BRUSHED ME OFF.

I thought, you don't care about your son at all. I thought, you just blabbed about it to get pity and sympathy. Everyone loves you because of your kidnapped son who you don't even give a damn about, I thought.

And then I went on a mission with fellow heroes of a much higer level than me. I told them about your son, Sam. And you know what they told me? "Oh, I saved him already."

...

The horror of it all dawned on me slowly. Here you are, a fine officer working to keep the peace in a bad neighborhood, constantly hoping to get your son back one day. You tell everyone you know about him in the hopes that a hero can bring him home to you. BUT YOU AND YOUR SON ARE CAUGHT IN SPACE AND TIME!!! We ALL go save your son, thousands of rescues made for the Wincott family, thousands of heroic persons out there trying to help. But no one can help you. You will never see your son again and your son will never be saved. You will repeat the same faithful lines over and over, and your son will have his crazy dreams over and over.

So I wanted to say, I'm sorry for thinking badly of you, Officer Wincott. And thank you for having eternal hope in spite of your obviously doomed situation. May a hero, or benevolent creator, one day break the spell for you. While I know that it will do you no good, I will seek out your already-saved-yet-never-saved son, and I will save him, just for you. Not for experience and a chance at glory. Just you.
