"So uh..." Kara's voice comes uncertainly over the PDA system. "Anyone up for a game of cards and a drink?"

Gordon Bennett. [There's been nothing but silence for the last few hours, ever since she ran from the Doctor. She's been wrapped up in her own thoughts, and the sudden voice coming from the blast thing on her arm is startling. The distraction of something to drink, someone less confusing to talk to, though, is not unwelcome.]

Dunno about the game, but I could go for a drink.

"Anything strike your fancy? I'm pretty sure these hatch things can give us whatever we want. Great thing is, it's not rationed and we don't have to worry about you know, it being the last bottle in the known universe."

Kara leans back against her couch in the little apartment she'd claimed just outside the Sanctuary.

"I'm Kara, by the way. Who's this?"

Hatches? What the... [You'll have to forgive Ace - she's only just arrived and has yet to figure out anything about Taxon.

She grasps onto the name, though, and tries not to think of the other Kara she once knew.]

m' Ace. And I'll take whatever you've got, so long as it's strong.

[She frowns at the tablet thing.]

Where are you?

"Yeah, hatches," agrees Kara, noting the girl's confusion. "Those big, white boxes with the buttons on them? They're sort of everywhere. You program in what you need and what you need pops out. I've probably hatched just about every single form of liquor I could think of."

"Good to meet you Ace. I don't drink anything that isn't. Anyway, I'm in an apartment over by where you first came in here. It's sort of tucked in the back a ways," ... away from everyone else that she could hear at the time ... "Look for the dot on your map that says 'Kara Thrace' and walk towards it. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it."

So that's what those things are. And they'll give you anything you ask for? [Though not the one thing she really wants, she's sure.

Ace likes the sound of this girl already. She climbs out of her most recent hiding spot and leaves the old library.]

I think I've got that.

"Just about, just uh, nothing living. I asked for a hedgehog and it gave me a bush and a little porcelain pig. It's apartment twenty-two-c. All the way in the back. See you in a bit."

It takes her ten minutes to follow the dot on the screen. Twice the beacon that signals the location of the TARDIS appears, letting her know that she's not far from the park where it is parked. She steels herself against it and continues on.

Though she considers not showing up at the stranger's apartment, the idea of mindless entertainment and alcohol is a lure too strong to s=resist. By the time she's at the plain door her mind is made up. She knocks.

"Hello?"

Kara answers the the door, a pistol in one hand and an open bottle of whiskey in the other. A cigar pokes out of her lips, smoke rising from it lazily. She's clearly been drinking in between the time she last spoke with Ace and the time it's been since the other woman got to her apartment.

The hand with the pistol goes up to the cigar, pulls it from her mouth.

"Ace, right?"

The bottle of whiskey gets shoved towards the woman anyway. Kara's got another open on the coffee table.

Ace's eyes narrow at the gun; she hate's the damn things. The cigar doesn't bother her, though it's been years - three in fact - since she's smoked anything. The bottle, however, is welcome.

"Yeah, it's Ace." She takes a swig from the bottle, not worrying about finding a glass. It burns as it goes down, and she takes another.

"Thanks."

Too bad for Ace that there's a second pistol sitting on the end table, identical to the one in Kara's hand. Closing the door behind Ace, she ambles back towards the couch and sets the gun in her hand down next to its twin.

"Back where I'm from, name like that get you a whole lot of questions," Kara grins at the girl, slumping back onto the couch. Sprawling is more the word. There's a couple of armchairs scattered haphazardly about if Ace wants to sit down.

"No problem."

She takes a pull from her bottle.

"You new?"

She'll just ignore that one, as well as the first; she's good at ignoring what she doesn't want to deal with, pushing it down to a deep corner of her mind until something happens and it all explodes, that is. But she will fall back into one of the chairs with enough force to scoot it back a few inches. She stay upright, feet on the floor; this is not her home and she's alert even with the bottle of alcohol in one hand.

"It's just my name, nothing t' question." It's not the name she was given but it's the only one she claims, the fact made rather obvious by the fact that it's written in large letters across the back of her coat.

"Yeah, I'm new." She takes a swig from the bottle. "I'm not plannin' on staying."

Kara does that too - the entire shoving something out of the way until it becomes too huge of a problem to deal with rationally sort of thing. She props her own feet on the end of the couch, lolling her head to the side to look at Ace with a slow, lazy grin.

"Not planning on staying? Yeah, me either, but it looks like we're stuck here for the time being. I mean, as places go to be trapped it's not so bad..."

Staring up at the ceiling, Kara rests the butt of the bottle on her stomach.

"I mean, the last ... long while of my life has been spent on a spaceship, running away from the frakking Cylons, shit, I mean, compared to cold metal decks, hard beds and fighting every single frakking day, this is paradise."

She looks at Ace again, serious.

"But it's still a cage, y'know?"

There's something about this woman - something Ace recognizes as being akin to herself - and she relaxes the slightest bit. She's still sitting upright, always ready to run if need be, but she lets the back of the chair take more of her weight.

"No matter how guilded the cage it's still a bleeding prison," she mutters. "I don't like prisons." Now there's an understatement.

"I'd rather be fighting every day, rather then be here, if it meant..." She makes a face, angry at herself, at him at the whole universe. This time when she takes a drink of the whiskey it's a chug, only stopping when she needs to breath. "What's a Cylon? Haven't come across those yet."

"Me neither. Peace is pretty boring after awhile," replies Kara, and lifts her bottle to Ace. "Here's to freedom, fighting and good booze."

At Ace's question, Kara looks at her for a long moment, and then decides it can't hurt if more people know about the things. "They're machines, created by humanity. They were designed to be subservient, to make life easier for us. Then, they woke up. Artificial intelligence developed into a consciousness of its own and decided it was done taking orders from humanity, started slaughtering people. There was a war, and then there was an armistice, and the Cylons left to go find their own planet. We didn't hear from them for about fifty years, and then suddenly they showed up all over again, and slaughtered most of the human race. There's only about fifty-thousand of us left now, all aboard ships. Every day is a fight to stay alive - if it's not the Cylons, then it's finding resources to keep the people on the ships alive. Water. Food. Fuel. Any of those run out, we're dead."

Freedom, fighting, and booze - it's a motto that would work well for Ace, except that the 'booze' invariably ends up being lemonade or the like. The Doctor doesn't approve of her drinking; she's never asked him why.

"They sound like cybermen, almost, except the part where they're from Earth. Cybermen come from another planet. And they used to be people who've had all but their brains replaced with bits of metal." She's had nightmares about that, being turned into a cybermen, stripped of all that she is. The memory is enough to warrant another slug of whiskey. It's already affecting her, making her warm and not a little fuzzy - her tolerance isn't what it once was.

"Someone should blow them up." It's a simple solution, but one that usually works for Ace. "'m gonna blow Taxon up, get the hell out here."

"Yeah, well, there's lots of them and we're pretty outnumbered as it is..." Kara's eyes open up fairly wide at the next remark, and she leans forward from the couch, looking at Ace with great interest. "Seriously?" And her lazy expression breaks into a bright, wicked grin. "That's pretty much the best idea ever."

Then again, they're both edging towards drunkenness. Something checks Kara's mind, reminds her that ammunition and explosives are not the answer to all of life's difficulties, but the whiskey is persuasive, and Kara swallows another mouthful.

"I dunno if blowing the place up'll let you get out of here, but damn, it'd be fun as hell to try."
