"That's either a criminal lack of interest in where you came from, which I've seen sadly, or they all know they popped up out of nowhere. Either way? It's disturbing."
Charlotte hadn't seen the signs, but they were a good idea. Anything that would tell them more about their prison would be helpful, even negative things. "Did you actually find a place to dig, or were you just hoping for a reaction?"
"I honestly don't think they even question their origins, you know there's no history books on the place to be found anywhere in Taxon. Well as far as I've looked anyway."
"I haven't found anything, either." Exploring empty buildings had been her little hobby before people showed up. "And I never found antiques or personal items left behind or anything. That's not natural. Not human."
It wasn't and it made Charlotte shiver. Even her cold fish father would leave behind a used hanky or dirty socks. SOMETHING.
Charlotte really wasn't ready to think about what they were if they weren't real. That called way too much into question. And they had no good way to answer those questions. Professor Song seemed to have an idea about that, though.
"My training is in conservation and cataloging, as well as art history and anthropology. I'm weird enough to enjoy meticulous detail work for hours. I don't shy away from heavy lifting." She couldn't think what else besides wanting to know where they hell they were made for a good job qualification.
"Wonderful. Something useful to do. Just let me know when to start. I'll have to dial up the right clothes." She shook her head. With money not an issue, Charlotte had been using her imagination to get all that lovely designer stuff she'd always had to save months for. "A good pair of boots for a start."
She matched Professor Song's laugh. "When you consider the kind of work that goes into something like an illuminated manuscript, the least we can do is take that kind of care unearthing things. Now that was tedium."

River chews on the end of her pen thoughtfully, "and to go back to your previous question, both."

Then she lets out a wry laugh, "there are far few people who appreciate the joy of tedium and a methodical approach. You're in good company."
