Kobra had never seen snow in his life. Not that he had ever felt a particular urge to do so; in the hot desert days he was much more likely to dream of buckets full of ice cubes than snow. Though he would've taken it, if ice cubes weren't available ( Read more... )

Cue Gwen, watching most of this from a distance. Being from Minnesota and having a job that sends her all over the world (before Taxon--when she was actually part of it), Gwen is no stranger to snow. But when it comes down to it, she likes skiing and that's about it. She hates bundling up, hates the big fluffy coats that remind her of being a kid, hates the snowflakes getting stuck in her hair, hates her skin getting drier than a desert ( ... )

Kobra had been so engrossed by what he was doing that he didn't hear Gwen approach. The ice seemed to hold up under him and he took a shuffling step forward, wondering if he'd be able to cross the entire lake.

When someone spoke behind him Kobra flinched, then flailed when he nearly lost his balance, attempting to turn around too quickly and draw his gun. Instincts are hard to strip off.

In the end he managed (gracelessly) to turn around without falling down, hand on the way to his raygun when he realised it was Gwen behind him. "Oh," he deflated, feeling stupid for reacting like this now. Especially in front of her.

"I...no. Why would you do that?" he asked, scrunching up his nose. They didn't really celebrate birthdays out in the zones because it was too complicated keeping track of time. Except for Ghoul, who insisted on celebrating after the Night of the Dead and Grace. They always just made up a day for her birthday though, because it made her happy.

The Killjoys were always good for a scare. Gwen never tired of it. To his surprise, she just shrugs. It's her M.O.

"'Cause it's fun. Ever heard of it?" She said, coming closer to the ice. "Right up you and your brother's alley." Party talked a lot of deserts, and she guessed if they thought light jackets were going to get them through a rough winter, ice was probably not a commodity where they were from.

"You have shoes with blades on the bottom," she explains, "and skate on the ice." She turns away from the lake to look at him. "It gets old when you fall on your ass twenty times, but it has its charm."

"No," Kobra shakes his head, though it is obvious that he's intrigued. He listens to Gwen's explanation with a small frown on his face before it lights up a little. "Pony would love that." But then he remembers that Show Pony is most likely never going to see this world. His face falls again and he sighs, stepping forward to get off the ice.

There's a crack and Kobra almost looses his balance as the ice breaks under one of his feet. "Motherfucking drac shit," he mutters and pulls his leg back up, now soaking wet and hissing when a sharp piece of ice scratches against his leg. What fucking shit. Kobra huffs and pulls a face when his soaked boot squelches when he finally steps of the ice.

The time for being surprised at weird names was passed, when it came to the killjoys. She clocks her head at little as a little shadow of sadness passes on his face. Bad memories? Gwen wonders.

She takes a step forward at the crack in the ice, startled herself. "Woah," she says. "Guess it's not skating season, after all. Don't fall in. Electrocuting you in the water is not really what I had in mind for tonight."

"Sounds like electric fun though," Kobra huffs, still starring down at his wet leg and boot in utter distaste. Fuck. It had been cold enough as it was, without his leg turning into an iceblock. his skin hurts too, so he probably got some nasty scratches there.

"Shit, I thought it'd hold me," he sighs and looks ruefully back at the lake before shaking his head and turning to Gwen. "What're you doing here?" Transitions had never been his strong point.

"It can be, if I can restart your heart. Otherwise? It's pretty much just you being...dead."

And he doesn't seem to be doing so good, so Gwen thinks that's a long shot. She shrugs at his question. She came to the lake to get out of her house, to look at the sky, to be in a place where it doesn't matter whether or not she is a freak stuck in a freaky place.

"Just...restless," she answers, with a sigh. "You?"

"Just dead doesn't sound exciting," Kobra agrees, hunching his shoulders up a little higher when he starts shivering. Seriously, how do people deal with weather like this?

"Same," he answers, kicking a little at the snow. he feels like he should still act petulant around Gwen because of Party, his instinct of being an annoying little brother kicking in. But he doesn't really have the energy for it. "I guess I like the snow. It's kinda cool. But all the cold sucks."

"You're brother would kill me." And she doesn't plan on being dead any time soon, so that settles that.

He reminds her of a little kid, still. Wanting to play out in the snow, running around on ice. At least he's dressed warmer than she's ever seen him. Not that Gwen's the queen of sensible dress. "You should probably hatch yourself a better coat," she offers. "Maybe some water-proof pants."

"I don't know if he would," Kobra mutters, a pouty edge to his voice. He's still a little angry with Party.

"What? Why?" Kobra looks at his coat, the one he didn't really hatch but got and shakes his head. He doesn't want another coat. This one is nice.

"Those are the only pants I have," he points out next, because pants don't fucking grow on trees in the desert. And these are awesome. They fit into his boots without being uncomfortable and everything. They are just fucking soaked now, which sucks. Looking up he wrinkles his nose at Gwen. "Are you the fashion police?"

Yes, he totally would. She knows Party cares about his brother more than anything else. But Gwen doesn't press it.

She rolls her eyes. "You're the one soaking wet in the middle of snow," she points out. "If you're gonna go out and play in it, you should probably find something waterproof."

"I'm not playing in it," Kobra points out, huffing. He was just doing research. Not...playing or something like that. He shakes his leg a little, huffing again. Fuck it. Maybe he can go sit in one of the coffee shops or something.

"Doesn't the snow, you know, make your electric cycles go crazy?" he asks, looking for a different topic and looking Gwen up and down like he expects to see electricity running up and down her body.

She almost laughs at the question. It's not a ridiculous one. She's definitely gotten worse.

"Not really," she answers with a nonchalant shrug. Touching snow--like touching water--doesn't really generate any kind of charge. "I guess in theory, it should. But I never was much a of rule-follower." She smiles wide to herself at this. "Storms, though? It can get pretty messy."

It's an understatement, and let's just say she's grateful Taxon's weather hasn't brought much lightning.

"Really?" Kobra asks, obviously fascinated and eying Gwen's hand. "What happens? Have you ever tried, like, turning storm into energy?" He's going into full tech-geek mode now.

"Really," she replies. a little amused by his boyish interest. "And sure. It's called me getting struck by lightning," she drawls, looking up at the sky. After a moment, she continues.

"It definitely. makes me a little more...active, than usual," she admits, and then shrugs. "But I don't need it."

"Well, does it hurt you?" Kobra asks, because clearly the thought of being struck by lightening is shiny. All the fucking potential for inventions. "Do you have full control over it all?"
