Mattie awoke with the sun as she always does, washed and dressed, the empty sleeve of her left arm pinned up neatly, read her Bible and checked the contents of her larder. Now it's time for cooking breakfast (there's an art to doing it one-handed that she mastered years ago, and carries the burns to prove it), and only now as she sets the table

The breakfast does look good from Rose's point of view. However, she doesn't know the woman and wouldn't intrude upon her hospitality. Still, it doesn't stop Rose from saying.

"That looks really good."

It would taste good as well if you had a mind to try some.

Oh, I couldn't. It's okay. You don't even know who I am.

[voice]

And whose fault is that? Have some manners and introduce yourself, then I shall know who you are and you may have some breakfast.

Oh, my apologies. My name is Rose, it's very nice to meet you. What is your name?

[voice]

[saucyspinster]

I am pleased to meet you as well, Rose. My name is Mattie Ross. You may call me Miss Ross or Miss Mattie.

[Ages are difficult to discern by voice alone, and although the woman sounds to be most definitely younger than Mattie, she can't be certain. Best to let the woman choose what's proper for herself.]

I shall call you Miss Ross. Have you been in this place long?

[She is younger than Mattie in one way, but Rose still has over five hundred years on her, which is something that she is going to keep to herself.]

[That's acceptable, and Mattie would be unlikely to believe anyone who tells her they're hundreds of years old anyway.]

No I have not, but I was here once before, some quarter of a century ago. I see that little has changed.

You were here before? Time hasn't moved on for me though; at least not as long as you say. And no, not much has changed.

Yes, and it does seem that I am the only one who has grown any older. I do not...understand the workings of this place, and I recall that I never did.

I still don't understand how this place works exactly either. Were you sent home at any time?

[saucyspinster]

I have been home for a quarter of a century. I have no inkling as to why I have been brought back here now.

I'm afraid I couldn't give you an explanation as to why you were brought back at this particular time either. There's still a few things that I don't understand about this city.
