[The tablet switches on to reveal Amy propping it upright on her table. There's a pint of Guinness in front of her and she looks at home here. Giving the camera a wave, she gets down to business.]Hi, guys. So I've got it into my head to put together an informal sports team here, just to give us a chance to exercise and have some fun. I was ( Read more... )

It was absolutely criminal to have a (losely enforced) smoking ban in his own pub, but Fitz knew he had to comform with "modern" nicities if he wanted to retain a majority of his clientel. Of course if anyone insisted on lighting up he wasn't going to stop them, but he himself would be taking it outside.

Which was where he was when Amy made her broadcast. He came back in, leaned against the bar, and gave her a curious look.

"A sports team?" he repeated. "That's certainly new and ambitious."

"Well I'm an ambitious sort of girl," she replied seriously, taking a sip of her drink.

"What do you think? Want in?" If she had to, she might start dragging people into it, because her idea needed participants to work!

Fitz glanced at his far-from-athletic physique and snorted.

"Seeing as I was never exactly picked first for footie-" (for various dirty kraut-related reasons) "-I'm probably better off on a chess team. However if you do end up a man short..."

"At this rate, I think I'll be an entire team short." She set her chin in her hand and slowly twisted her glass under her other hand.

"I just need something to do, y'know?"

He gestured around at the pub, his own reaction to the inertia of Taxon, then pushed himself from the bar in the direction of her table.

"I know, love, I know." Fitz sighed and scratched at his stubble. "All of the go go go go and then all of a sudden--" He sat at one of the other chairs, his skinny form folding like origami. "Stop. Stuck. Killing time until the bloody town falls apart again."

There's a little pause as he considers going for it. "And we're just left wondering what he'd be doing."

Her eyes darted towards Fitz at the mention of him. Leaning across the table, she gave him a conspiratorial look.

"He's like some sort of infection, isn't he? Gets under your skin and it's hell getting over him. He changes your life, for the better, of course, but also for the worse when he takes off again." And yet all those years she'd kept those silly little dolls and drawings. She might not have kept talking about him once she reached her teenage years and felt she had to grow up, but he was always there under her skin.

"Yeah," Fitz agreed, nodding. "Or when he pulls some bloody stupid stunt and almost gets himself killed."

Suddenly he wanted another cigarette but he could just picture Martha's glare. "But he does make you better. He tried to make everything better and makes you think you can do the same."

"There is that," Amy agreed, drawing on the condensation on her glass. She thought of all the Doctor tried to do to save people, to understand them and make their lives better. She thought of Taxon, and how all their lives could do with some sort of betterment.

"We should do that here," she said suddenly. "Pick up where he left off and try to make things better." The only problem was that the Doctor was a genius and Amy was decidedly not.
