026: VISUAL [ nothing is forever, there's got to be something better than in the middle ]

May 15, 2011 00:35

This broadcast is not accidental, although it may seem like that's the case. Max is sitting at her kitchen counter, an empty glass cradled in her hands and a bottle containing a bright blue liquid sitting nearby. She's staring at the counter top, not really looking at anything in particular, and it's a significant amount of time, probably a few ( Read more... )

[Visual] *ahem* Pardon the tl;dr icanhaslogic May 15 2011, 06:50:19 UTC
Spock is fairly certain that recognizes that blue liquid, but there isn't much to say about it. This isn't Federation territory as far as he can tell, and coming on top of a declaration like that, the human half of him can understand the escapism that his Vulcan half can't.

Perhpas that's why it takes a little longer than it might have for him to formulate some kind of a response, longer that it rightfully should have to even consider picking up the tablet to answer. He was alone. His human blood screamed that it was horriffic, but there was always that cold thread of logic and green blood through it all that reminded him that whether or not it was preferable, he was just as alone.

He may not know the girl speaking, but he almost owed something to an absent captain to at least try and make an effort. Who knew but that any of them might find the way out now? And this isn't something that there is any gain in lying about. Logically (and there it was again), this has to be the truth, so there isn't even the hope that this is all some disgusting joke. But there isn't much else to say.

"...are you certain?"

Max is about a glass and a half into the bottle when Spock responds to her, and when she looks at the screen it's clear that she's on her way to intoxication. Her cheeks are flushed and her eyes are bleary, almost as if she's holding back tears. She's not, though. She hasn't cried about this yet, which is something that surprises even her. When Peter, Buffy, and Cordelia left, she was inconsolable for hours. Kirk's departure doesn't hurt any less than theirs did, but all she feels right now is numb.

She nods in response to the man addressing her, looking down for a moment. "Yeah. His...dot, or whatever else you'd call it is gone."

[Visual] Oh, good. Because I get the feeling that there's going to be a lot of it. icanhaslogic May 15 2011, 07:27:19 UTC
It only took a moment to verify that, and, sure enough, the last illogical piece of hope that Spock had was gone. He wasn't just hiding somewhere, wasn't out on his own trying to pretend that everything was alright when everyone else knew that it wasn't, he was actually gone. It was strange to think about--even if Spock hadn't been here all that long himself, the captain had said (what?) two years. Two years that Spock couldn't account for, but two years all the same. And now vanished.

Strange.

"...I see."

She nodded again, looking back down as the man confirmed Kirk's sudden absence for himself. The glass was rotated in her hands a few times before she spoke up again.

"I'm sorry." It's not much, nor is it adequate, but it's all there really is to say.

It took actual effort for him to reconstruct that cold, logical mask--to remove any and every hint that he had been affected by the captain's disappearance from his face. That was almost disturbing by itself, that it had taken so much work, but he couldn't afford to be thinking about that now. There wasn't anything that he could do about it--Jim was gone, and all that he could do was continue to move forward.

"You have done nothing to apologize for."

"No," she replied before swallowing the remaining contents in her glass and setting it and the bottle aside for the time being. "But this always sucks to go through."

"I am very much aware." Perhaps not here, but he certainly wasn't a stranger to loss. His mother, his planet, his people...he would manage, as he had before, and move on. No matter what it took.

Max has had her fair share of loss at home, herself, both due to death and them disappearing, but nothing like her planet disappearing. She sighed, finally looking back up at the screen.

"You were a member of the crew, weren't you?" she asked. The one who'd been killed in the zombie invasion, but she knew better than to ask that out loud.

Even if the whole idea hadn't been distasteful, there was no reason to lie. It was rather obvious just whose crew he belonged to, anyway, what with the uniforms and all. It was no secret.

"Yes. I--" am? "was."

Max manages half a smile at him before looking down, then back up.

"He was really proud," she says after a moment. "Of the ship, of the crew." She's not sure why she's saying it, and it bothers her to be talking about him like he's dead, but it felt like something that needed saying.

It wasn't something that Spock had expected to hear, but at the same time, it was something that he knew. Another difficult balance in his life that had always seemed to be composed of nothing but difficult balances.

"...thank you."

"Yeah," she replies, another tiny smile on her face. This one stays on a little bit longer, and then a small sob escapes her and she has to turn away again.

Suddenly, it felt as though he were intruding upon something intensely private, and he had to avert his gaze or risk whatever he had earned of his self-control back breaking down again. And still, he couldn't bring himself to end the transmission; somehow...it almost felt like...but he had never met this girl before and feeling was preposterous in the first place.

"I am sorry."

There aren't any tears, although she's expecting them. She hates crying but the fact that she's not is frustrating at this point. After a moment she takes a deep breath and lets it out with a sigh before looking back at the screen.

"Thank you."
