001 [Holo] Dammit...that's another butterfly

He’s always disoriented for a moment when he arrives someplace, body tense, wired for worry. What if he’d gotten it wrong? He opens his eyes, brow furrowed as he scans the room. Apparently this time, he’s gotten it very wrong. He’s supposed to be in 2011 New York…with his younger, stupider self ( Read more... )

As soon as he matched the voice to the familiar face, Matt was moving from his room in one of the abandoned buildings to reach the Sanctuary.

He was going to end up a very paranoid man if people like this continued to join them. Aside from Claire, he didn't much like the Petrelli's, as they always seemed to be screwing up his life. Call it what you will; teleporting a man to Africa and leaving him to die in the desert? In Matt's book, that's Attempted Murder 2. And that's without rehashing his spectacular rendezvous with Nathan. Now Matt was ready for blood; without Peter, things might've been -- well, who knew?

As soon as he's in reach of Peter's mind, he grasps as hard as he can at it in an attempt to get an upper hand while the other man is unprepared. He doesn't think through that this is not innocent Peter. Matt's too focused on making another man pay. He feels like he's got nothing to lose, now.

Peter was on full alert with the weirdness that's going on but Matt snuck a shot in that made the whole world shimmer with pain. In retaliation, Peter pushed back just as hard with just as much intent to cause pain.

Didn't like your travel accommodations, Matt?

Definitely not innocent Peter and he had learned to use Matt's power almost as well as he had out of necessity.

He stumbled from the shock of it as he rushed into the building, which angered him and he pushed back harder. It was like trying to grip a bar of soap lathered in grease. Every time he got the upper hand, began to create a world in which to lock Peter, he'd lose it again.

'I should kill you right now.'

Matt knew it was an empty threat; for everything he could do, Peter could counter almost without thought. He couldn't even get into the surface of the man's memories.

Peter pushes right back, not really trying to lock Matt in any kind of world--his vendetta with him is more a reaction than anything. His interest is mostly in making Matt back off.

'There's line. I'm pretty sure you're at the back of it but enjoy the instrumental music while you wait'

Yes, he made Matt hear elevator music. At least for a little while.

After a struggle, Matt managed to quiet the attempt at knocking him off his game. Trying a different tactic that required he sit down in the elevator he'd entered and concentrate, Matt attacked again, and then delved into Peter's memories at the same time.

'Elevator music? That's how you react? You really are a freak.'

Whether or not the blame for what happened could be placed on anyone didn't matter to Matt at the moment. This Peter was already screwed up beyond help. It didn't matter if he paid for one more thing just to make Matt feel better. And there was always the chance that Matt could lose this battle.

Matt might get a bit of Peter's memories as he's concentrating on holding up the elevator rather then keeping Matt out. Of course seeing this Peter's memories might scar him more than he wants.

You'd prefer something with bars?

Cells were really easier to manufacture than elevators. Peter wouldn't hurt Matt, not if he didn't have to.

The most he got was things he already knew, and that frustrated him. Matt didn't need to see images of himself or Peter. The other Peter.

'Hah, I'd like to see you try.' Why was he taunting the guy, again?

The elevator stopped at the designated floor, but Matt didn't notice while he still struggled at his three tasks of fending off Peter, attacking Peter and trying to read his memories. This was why Matt hated his ability sometimes.

Peter was pretty good at guarding his memories naturally. He wasn't the open book, naive, trusting person he'd been when he was younger, which made him harder to crack.

'Really? Don't fuck with me, Matt. I'm not naive, trusting or stupid anymore.'

That's okay. The elevator wasn't an elevator anymore. Matt's taunting gave Peter just enough pissed off motivation to solidly lock the cell around the man. After all, he had one less job to do. He didn't care what Matt's memories were.

Matt stood up in panic, his breath quickening. Footsteps echoed forever as he ran to the edge of his small prison cell surrounded by black nothing. The bars were cold to the touch, and Peter's voice was whispering around him.

He'd known he was rushing, taking a stupid approach to weaken Peter with his own horrible memories. Now, Matt was imprisoned in his own mind, something he didn't think would ever happen to him again. His hand hit against the bars as he yelled in frustration out into the space.

Peter left Matt where he was, continuing down the hallway. Later he'd let him out, or the man would figure out how to break himself out. Either way, maybe next time he'd be nicer.
