026 ± [location: taxon high] don't you look at me like life don't hold you anymore mystery

Ambrose Langwe had always wanted to be a educator, and with his passion for science there was never any doubt about his subject areas. He'd finished college and started teaching before the war, and once it began he volunteered for the Army Corps of Engineers as his brain would be more useful than his ability to shoot straight. A portion of his time ( Read more... )

River is at the point where she is almost entirely convinced this isn't a hallucination. It's too solid with too many participants and the rare shining light of 'people seeing this and also wondering if it's a hallucination,' which was comforting.

School was less so. Little miss tiny genius never attended a school that wasn't for the gifted, and those tended to not have a massive press of bodies and hallways and noise. The concept itself was foreign, primitive, and in practice it was disconcerting. How do people learn like this? Where is the outdoor classroom with the weird little kneeling desks and informational vid screens? Obviously this era bred a generation of morons, and she spends most of her time being shuffled between classes aimlessly while looking for any other familiar shining lights.

Well, at this point she will take any familiar face she can get.

"You'll be late."

Excuse the fact that she's staring. Or don't. Sorry, Angela, you have a crazy person glued to you no matter what time period it is.

[Generally speaking, River is one of those strange creatures that enjoys learning. However, considering that she only half-believes this to be a proper school she can easily switch over to Angela's way of thinking. She's heard tales of ditching class before, spoken of like horrible treasonous pirate crimes. This should obviously be fun.

Which is why she's not going anywhere and just staring at Angela blow kisses to herself as if Angela is the crazy one in this equation.]

Fish lips. Don't get stuck that way.

[Said as if that is sound, completely reasonable and warranted advice.]

It's remedial.

[When you know 26th century science, things from the mid-twentieth century are easily dismissed as unnecessary. Besides, she's been shuffled around enough by the high school throngs and she is ready to latch onto Angie like some manner of leech. Only less bloodsucking. That whole mess was last week, thank you very much.]

[She nods. It's short and to the point and she closes her eyes when she does it to keep the world from swerving sickly in her vision. It's distracting when it does that, and when she's done (it doesn't take more than a second) River is looking cautiously up and down the hallway.]

Where do we hide?

[...it is very, painfully obvious she hasn't done this before. Like, ever.]

[River is still wearing her coat. She is prepared. Also, taking this far more seriously than one normally would. There is another nod, this time smaller and she keeps her eyes open. (Will they have to climb out of an elevator shaft? The wonderings of River Tam, ladies and gentlemen.) Improvement!]

Flight. A preferable situational response. We should be fast.

[Oh, look at that. She's smiling. If there is ever a chance to revel in the opportunity to be a fugitive and risk nothing more than a detention (as opposed to, you know, assassins and bounty hunters) she is going to revel like nobody's business.]

[And so, River follows while keeping an eye on all the doors and corners. It wouldn't do to get caught now.]

Shh. [One can't really shush the sound of feet on linoleum, but she's going to try anyway.]

[How bad it is that River is relatively used to this kind of navigation? Anyway. She does not, in fact, get down. Instead, and contrary to all usual reason, she keeps walking forward (how she can do this and not make that usual linoleum noise is a mystery) and peeking in the door.

It appears they are all otherwise absorbed in matters having nothing to do with two class cutting students.

Then she gets down and motions for Angela to follow. For being new at this, she is surprisingly good at sneaking.]

[It's really very easy, just listening and calculating the positions of all the people in the room. The sounds of heels versus the sounds of toes, the reverberation and echo, the shift of weight. All of it means something when you know how to calculate it properly. She pauses for a moment (one of them turned to the door, but he's turning back around now) before making her way across the great divide where the wall opens up.

This might involve staying close to the ground and doing something close to the splits. At this point it isn't clear if she's showing off or just doesn't realize these skills are currently misplaced, anachronistic and just plain odd, but oh well. She's standing on the other side now and going for the door.]
