Without opening her eyes, DG rolled over to reach blindly for her alarm clock. It took her a few seconds to find it in the darkness, but, eventually, she succeeded in switching it off and the room fell silent again.
It wasn't the biggest of rooms - in fact, it was the smallest room in a house that wasn't particularly large to begin with - but it was her room. Her room, her sketches pinned to the walls, her bed. She had no desire to leave it and begin yet another day of taking other people's orders.
But she had to, didn't she? Tara was probably already up and it would be nice to have breakfast together before one or the other of them had to head off to work. Her sister was the only reason she was still in Taxon. Without Tara, she'd have jumped on her bike and simply kept on driving. On and on until Taxon and the Hilltop Cafe and everything else simply faded away. Because this wasn't her life. This wasn't where she belonged. She wanted more and she was going to find it. One day. For now, Tara was working hard to give DG the chance to go to college - a chance she hadn't had herself - and there was no way she'd let her down. If they were going to run from Taxon, they'd run together.
Eventually, she struggled out of bed, found her slippers and headed downstairs, yawning widely as she wandered into kitchen and ran a hand through her tousled hair.
