Not after everything she's done and how far she's come.

The Doctor appears on the screen, still looking disheveled, if a little more tired, now. The high he got from being freed is wearing off, and he's starting back on the sick route he was in before.

"What are you up to, Rose?"

Rose doesn't look at the screen. She's busy looking at some sort of energy meter and scribbling notes. "Helping you fulfill your sentence, Doctor. The key has bits of the TARDIS. How do you think I found it in the first place? Parallel world? not the first time I saw Donna."

She's lying. She's lying through her teeth. The Doctor may or may not realize this.

"Planning on hopping us ahead six months?" the Doctor asks. He picks the key from his pocket, and looks down at the screen. He's been better, lately. He's noticed it, Morgana's noticed it. Maybe this is why. The TARDIS key he had before is gone, taken with his sonic and his other things.

He holds the key up for her to see.

"Right, then," he says. "Come and get it."

Infuriating man. Of course he can't just drop it in the mail slot the way a proper bloke would do after a break up scene like the one they just had.

"Something like that," she answers noncommittally. She sighs and finally looks up to the screen. There are a hundred sharp, cutting remarks she could give him. She bites her bottom lip and shakes her head.

"Why? So you can convince me you don't need--my help?" me was the word on the tip of her tongue.

"Don't be stupid, Rose," the Doctor says. "Course I need your help. I just...can't be anyone's you know...alien boyfriend or whatever. Domestically disabled, Rose, that's me. Remember?"

"Never asked you to be," Rose responds. She's staring hard at her notebook, eyes narrowed as she makes some marks in it. It's not entirely true but she didn't say the words so it counts in her book.

"I can't--You don't have to be my alien boyfriend. I just can't watch you pull away from me all the time."

"Things got...complicated," he says. "You're one of my best mates, Rose, but---that's really all we can be."

One day, she'll be happier with this, he tells himself. And he has to protect himself from that day, all over again.

"Besides, do you have any idea how rubbish I am at romance? Really, now."

"Doctor, I didn't kiss you because I want romance. You think I should be scared of you. It was the best way to show you it doesn't. After that, just got carried away a bit. It's been a while since I've had a boyfriend y'know."

That's her story and she's sticking to it.

"Mmmm, and I thought Mickey was bad 'til I met you."

She's trying. That wound is way to open right now to really make it sound good.

"You'll find someone," he promises. "Someone who'll make you happy."

Because, in the end, that's all they want, isn't it? Happiness. The Doctor, on the other hand, is focused entirely on protecting himself. Protecting his hearts.

He offers her a small smile. "Try again?"

She rolls her eyes at him, biting the inside of her lip. "Only if you'll get some sleep. You look tired."

Like the answer will ever be anything but yes.

"Well, you can't exactly snog me into silence this time---good tactic, by the way, I should have more arguments end that way," he says. He affects his most flippant tone possible in an effort to try to hide what that whole situation meant to him. After all, he's got some self-protecting to do.

"Nah, I've got a few more days in me before I need some sleep."

She's building walls and adding layers as fast as she can but she's not quite quick enough for that one to bounce off. She winces a bit then nods. "M'sure there's plenty of people that'd oblige."

She looks up at the screen then back to what she's working on. "Yeah? Funny I never noticed you lookin' like you'd been run over by the TARDIS."

He lets out a small, cynical laugh. "Yeah, I'm sure." Of course, there aren't a lot of people in Taxon who even like him, much less that would kiss him.

"It can't be helped, Rose, but this---" he holds up the TARDIS key. "This is the key. You see? I've been better since you gave it to me. There must be some residual energy left in the TARDIS key that's keeping me back to the way I was."

Rose can't help herself. "Well you change your mind, want me to start endin' our arguments that way I could muddle through."

It's awkward because they don't fight. Of course they don't kiss and end up on the settee every day either.

The key and his words make her catch her breath. She can't take the key. Not if it's making him better. "You probably ought to keep it then. Wear it close to your hearts."

Willpower. She has none of it when it comes to this man. She pinches her bottom lip between her thumb and first finger. Of course he can find her if he wants to. She shows up on the tablets but he's not asking her where she is so much as he's asking her permission to be there.
