[location: Library/accidental visual] i will get into your head and every day out of your bed

Apr 08, 2010 23:29

A video feed cuts on suddenly, the image wobbling around and accompanied by a high-pitched beeping for a moment, until it settles into stability and silence. The screen shows a wide-angle view of a double bed, occupied by two bodies, one of which is a grumbling Giles, sitting up and rubbing a hand over his face ( Read more... )

Tara, in fact, has never seen or even heard of Ethan; the last time he was seen in Sunnydale was before she'd really known any of the Scoobies other than Willow. So when she picks up the tablet to call Giles and is greeted by the visual instead, she's just embarrassed, not horrified.

"Giles! I-I'm sorry. I can c-call back later. I just - I needed to ask you something. It's kind of urgent, but not like.. the city's about to burn down urgent. Right." She's making a mess of this and knows it.

On the other hand, Ethan knows Tara- quite well, from his perspective, and he's been fond of her since before they were ever close. (He remembers her dying, too, but Taxon is a place where that doesn't necessarily matter and he prefers to be grateful she's here than mourn it like she's still dead. Maybe Joyce will show up.)

"Tara, darling," he says, picking up his tablet. "What's going on?"

"Oh, um. I'm s-sorry, but I don't think we've met yet. For me at least. Maybe you're from my future?" she offers. After all, it's possible, and she doesn't want to rude. But she really has no clue; she can't remember Giles ever mentioning a partner, but it would be like him to play something like that close to the vest, if this man lived in England, say.

That's...a conceivable explanation, he concedes, at least here in Taxon. In a manner of speaking he is, anyway, but that far? And he knows how much time there was between Giles meeting her and his meeting her; not a lot.

...but maybe he should just play along until he knows what's going on.

"Oh, that's too bad. I didn't know there was more than one real magic shop in Sunnydale." She supposes she shouldn't be surprised; it is Sunnydale, after all. Still, it would be good to know, when and if she ever got back.

"No," he says, carefully, after pausing. "There was really only the one."

Uncertainly, she says, "The Magic Box?"

"Well," he says, philosophically, "this is a pickle. You know Rupert and the Box, but you don't know me. I might have my feelings hurt."

He's a little sardonic, yes, but it's thinly veiling genuine puzzlement and concern. What the fuck is going on here?

"I'm sorry," she says, and she really is, because whatever's going on, he's acting like a friend, and Giles clearly.... well. "If it helps, I came from early 2002."

"It isn't completely unheard of, I suppose," he notes, more to himself than to Tara, thinking of might-have-beens and wondering what this might be, but he rubs his mouth with one hand and refocuses on her.

"Maybe. So we should have met by then? Now?" Taxon's been confusing before, but this is a new one for Tara. Still, she'd had worse than confusing recently, so this could be dealt with.

"Oh, yes. And I'm buggered if I can explain why we wouldn't have." No, he can think of a few explanations- but none he'd want to think about. (Tara wouldn't have to know him well to recognize 'troubled', but it flickers across his face and is gone, suppressed.) "Like I said, darling, it's a pickle."

"I-I don't know." Her first thought is a actually a frightening one; she still feels some of the effects of what Glory did to her, now and then. She supposes it's possible that new problems, like memory loss could crop up. But now - forgetting just him, specifically, seems very odd. It would be incredibly hard magic, erasing one person and one person only, she knows that much. Equally hard, or even harder maybe, to insert her into his mind. Her only experience with glitches so far is Angelus and Buffy's temporary lack of powers, so it doesn't occur to her that this could be that.

"I guess it's... nice to meet you, then. Again."

With quick flashing smile - rakish and a bit untrustworthy, but genuinely friendly - he tucks away what worries him with what seems like no effort at all. "You're always a sight for sore eyes, love, even when you're making that face at me."

His manner coaxes a small smile from her. She thinks it must be worse for him, expecting her to know him and having her not. "Sorry. Just one more thing to worry about, isn't it?"

"It could be worse. You're not dating Xander too, are you?"

Ethan would be horrified to realize just how much he sounds like Somebody's Dad there, by the way.
