Claire walked into the cantina with Mr. Muggles trailing close behind, and was surprised to find that it was empty. Nathan had more or less taken ownership of the place after it had followed him to Taxon from Patzcuaro. When she was looking for him, she usually found him there, drinking or sitting with a folder of notes, planning out moves that they weren't certain he would ever be able to make.
She didn't like the idea of this Taxon thing being permanent. There were too many people who they'd left behind. Her family had to be wondering where she was; her mom probably thought she had vanished into thin air when the agents tore the house apart and didn't find her. Peter needed to know that Nathan wanted to make things right. They had to find a way out, they just didn't belong in Taxon.
The cantina didn't belong in Taxon either, but she was glad it was there. It was someplace familiar, even if she always thought of the table Nathan sat at as the one he had passed out on. She never drank when she came in, and she didn't want to today. Alcohol was pointless for her, it didn't make her feel any better or worse than she already felt, and it didn't even taste very good.
But apparently, Mr. Muggles liked it well enough, because when she turned around, she noticed that he was lapping up a spilled beer that someone had left by the pool table. "Hey, no!" Claire warned him, walking over to pick up the beer and nudge him away. "That is the last thing I need you getting into, okay?"
She could have used her tablet to find Nathan, but the place was such a mess that she figured she'd clean it up and see if he came in. Or Parkman. Maybe she'd just play bartender for a while, and see if anyone came in who knew a way out of the city. They hadn't talked to everyone, it was possible that someone knew something.
Unfortunately, another thing Claire didn't know anything about was mixing drinks.
