[Location - Sunnydale High Library]

Tara has been spending more and more time in the Sunnydale library.  For one thing, Giles is there, and she's always glad to see him.  And, of course, the collection on magic is even more impressive than she'd guessed it had been.  She's doing research for herself, and for Piper and DG as well ( Read more... )

Sam is still recovering from the whole tripping over a bomb incident so he's kind of restricted from things like working out and target practice. That leaves the library so Sam hits it. He's trying to figure out what Ruby's point in training him is, how he's going to be able to do with his brain what she says he will and what demon blood actually does to him. That's a long list so he goes into the library, skirting around the walls and gathering up a nice stack of books on telekinesis, psychics, demons and blood diseases. He walks around to find Tara at the table which brings a smile to his face.

"Hey," he greets her as he puts his stack of books on the edge of the table. "Mind sharing table space with me?" He's still bruised and scraped up, moving a bit slower and more awkwardly than usual.

She smiles, happy to see him up and about, if a bit worse for the wear. "Not at all. How are you?"

He sits down in the chair, shuffling his books a bit into two stacks.

"I'm alright. Still sore but it could have been a lot worse. You made it through alright I see."

"More or less. Too bad the people don't heal as fast as the buildings seem to." The regenerating buildings actually weird her out a little, so making light of it is akin to whistling in the dark.

"Yeah...that was more than a little weird," Sam agrees. The buildings creeped him out a little. It's all too...Ground Hog Day or something. Except he's got the bruises to prove it wasn't. He looks over at her stack of books. "What are you researching?"

"Um... reviewing some spell basics, mainly. There's a young woman who's just coming into her powers, and I said I'd help if I could. Not - not that I'm an expert or anything, but... it can be hard, figuring it out alone."

Sam's got a natural prejudice to magic. He was raised with it but he's willing to try and put it aside because Tara doesn't fit the stereotype. "I can imagine. It's nice of you to help her with it."

He's not the only one Tara's met with such views, and handles it better than most. Still, she doesn't want to shove it in his face, so she says, "It's the least I can do; not like I have a lot of other demands on my time." She smiles. "What about you? Researching all the things that go bump in the night?"

"That's kind of a problem here isn't it? All that time and nothing to do with it," Sam sympathizes. He might be getting a little restless and bored. He looks down at his stack, brow furrowing a moment before he answers. "Sort of. Psychics, telekinesis and demons." There's also a genetics book slid in there too. He's not sure how it all ties together but that's what he's trying to figure out.

"Oh. Well... you certainly came to the right library. Mr. Giles is a good reference too, especially with demons." She tucks some hair behind her ear. "If you'd like me to introduce you sometime..."

"Yeah?" Sam asks, eyebrows shooting up a second before he smiles. "That'd be great. Anyone I can talk demon shop with is nice." He leans forward, elbows on the table. "So what kind of magic particularly are you looking at? I have some experience with runes but not with any kind of real magic."

Somehow in the Winchester family runes never equaled black magic. Maybe because the magic is in the runes and not in the caster or maybe because they were used to devil traps.

"Oh... I've not gotten much into runes. You mean like for divination?"

"We always used them more for protection," Sam answers. "Like devil's traps, wardings and runes I chalked on the Impala to make it less noticeable. I've never tried divination."

"Oh, I see. I've never done very much long term magic; most things are kind of immediate effect that I've done so far. Do you do any sort of spell when you put them on, or is the rune itself what does the protecting?"

"The rune itself," Sam answers. "I don't know any real magic. It's just copying runes out of a book." He furrows his brow and tilts his head. "Offensive stuff or defensive? I don't know much about magic honestly."

"I'm... I'm a little better at defensive. But I've done some of both," she says, almost careful. She likes Sam, and she doesn't want him to think less of her, or treat her differently. On the other hand, she's not going to lie about who she is or what she can do. Not if he directly asks.
