So, Taxon! Stefan doesn't think you've heard enough about vampires lately. To be fair, he was as surprised as all of you to find out the place was ~*infested*~ with them, and he is in fact part of the infestation, ergo: questions. To ask these, he is seated in a small, bright kitchen, at one of them there barstools, which means most of what is ( Read more... )

Sam is sitting at a table with some books scattered all around him. He's been researching. He quickly makes some notes on the herb Stefan is talking about then looks up with a friendly grin. He knows what it's like to have people look at you like you're a freak so he's very careful not to do that to Stefan right now.

"I've never heard of that but it's interesting. I'm not a gardener but we might consider seeing if we can hunt up some place to build a green house. It's always better to be safe than sorry. I've learned that the hard way too many times."

Basically, Sam approves of this message.

Sam reminds Stefan of Matt more every time they speak; almost everyone in Taxon has left someone behind, and while he really can't complain because Elena is with him, well...he misses his friend. His ~*human*~ friend.

"There's a greenhouse in the woods here." Which he uh, knows because he hunts there, but never mind. "It would be worthwhile to speak to the the owner, I think."

He smiles crookedly at Sam, eying the notetaking. "I can look into it, so thanks, that's good advice. Vervain is also called verbena, for your records; it works best when it's dried."

"Definitely. Especially if it's already set up for growing things," Sam says. His eyes light up a little. "That one I have heard of. Lemon verbena. It's used--you probably know all this."

As far as friends go? Sam's never had that many because they moved so much. He's open to making new ones.

Stefan makes an encouraging hand gesture. "No, please--I'm not as knowledgeable as all that, and the worst that can happen is you do tell me something I already know. I'm sure we'd both survive the experience."

With the encouragement Sam takes a breath and then begins reciting what he knows about the herb.

"It's used in butterfly gardens because it attracts a few different kinds of butterflies. It was called 'tears of isis' in Ancient Egypt and supposedly it was used to staunch the wounds of Jesus after the crucifixion. Uhm...Faulkner wrote it's the only thing that can be scented above horses and courage. It's in his short story 'The Odor of Verbena'. The oil of lemon verbena is used in perfume and it used to be considered a sex steroid and was used to induce abortions."

He shrugs a bit bashfully. "That's pretty much all I know. Not that I'm sure any of it is useful here unless we want to start a perfumery, butterfly garden or sex clinic."

Clearly this encouragement is the best thing Stefan has done all day. "Imagine if we combined those two ideas."

So this joking thing, when it happens, is terrifically good for our emerald-orbed woepire, as tiny and deadpan as they are. But jokes are an important part of the ritual of like, becoming friends, so ....there that is.

That gets a chuckle out of Sam. "We'd be pioneers in Entomology."

Yeah, Sam gets that and he's good with dumb jokes, even delivered deadpan.
