001: [holo] father will not be pleased

"Yes, and once you've finished that, I'd like you to muck out my horses. There's also my riding boots, which are in a disgraceful state, and my armour to polish, floor to sweep, bed to make, saddle to shine-- properly this time, and are you even listening to me, Merli--"

Unfortunately, Arthur's tirade is cut woefully short, on account of his sudden ( Read more... )

"Put that away before you hurt someone," Elena says, dryly, having caught Arthur's little rant and finding it--well. People who give directions like that get on her nerves, mostly because they remind her of herself.

"The people who kidnapped us aren't going to show up, and if you want to leave that room you have to pick up this thing I'm talking to you through and walk through the door with it. Before you ask, no, I'm not working with them, I'm trying to escape. And right now, I'm helping you."

"Yes, I could do some very grave damage to the thin air, couldn't I?" Arthur shoots back with no small amount of irritation, and very pointedly not sheathing his sword.

"And I'm supposed to just take your word, am I? How am I to know there's not an army of warlocks beyond that door, just waiting to riddle me with arrows? Or worse, turn me into a-- frog."

"I was thinking of you--and I guess you could just sit there, but there's no other way out, and you'll eventually starve to death. So I'd recommend getting it over with, like--" 'Tearing off a bandaid' wouldn't make any sense to him, she guesses, based on the whole 'sword-and-sorcery' theme she's picked up on.

"--jumping into cold water. You don't have to take my word for it, but I thought you should know what your options are. I'm Elena Gilbert, by the way."

Alas, Elena's words are fairly convincing, and she doesn't talk like a wielder of magic-- which is to say vaguely and in riddles. She is a little rude, however... in ways that remind him oddly of Morgana.

"Tell me then, Elena Gilbert, do you always address royalty so bluntly?" He asks, making the concession of reaching out to lift the tablet, gingerly, as if it might burn him.

Elena moves her tablet back slightly, which reveals the castle room behind her, and raises her eyebrows as she smooths back her hair.

"You're the first royalty I've met," she says, excluding her own claim to the title--'queen' is a little less impressive when followed by 'of the school'. "Maybe if you'd introduced yourself that way I'd have known, wouldn't I? You can't expect people to just intuit who you are. But--you know, you're not my royalty, so actually yes, I'm going to treat you like anyone else. The building you're in is called the Sanctuary, by the way, and you may have noticed the bracelet on your wrist? That doesn't come off, and it's going to be important in a minute."

"Well, given that most people tend to recognize me on sight, I'm not much used to having to introduce myself. Prince Arthur of Camelot." In spite of his general air of crankiness, he's cordial enough as he bows his head at Elena's image. This is probably due to the fact that he has a certain respect for people that are irreverent towards him, and also partly because she's pretty. He's a bit of a sucker for that.

Given that the tablet hasn't harmed him in any obvious way, he approaches the door. There's an air of surprise as it opens to reveal a distinct lack of warlock warriors on the other side. He still has his sword drawn however, for the sake of caution-- the door disappearing in his wake is somewhat alarming ( ... )

"Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Prince Arthur." Elena inclines her head in return, slightly farther than Arthur did to her, which is her concession to his rank. She's used to boys taking a certain approach to her, and recognizing that in Arthur is pleasing, which improves her opinion of him even while she reminds herself she is very much involved.

Still, when being pretty has its advantages...it's really not her fault.

"I think it might be," she replies, smiling at his reactions. He's cute, she decides. "And I mean that it never comes off, but don't take my word for it. The way it was explained to me is that it's what lets us use all the--things around here. Do you see that thing--" she points at the nearest hatch, switching to holo mode first to make it more obvious what she means "--with the pad on it? Put your hand on that, and imagine something. Try an apple. It's not going to hurt you, I do this all the time."

"The pleasure is all mine." That might even be a slight smile in return, which makes a pleasant change from the 'cantankerous douchebag' look he so often sports.

Giving up the bracelet as a lost cause after some fruitless struggling, he sighs, mentally vowing to try it again later. "Stubborn thing," he concludes, giving it a dark look, before glancing up at the tablet again, and then in the direction indicated by Elena. He's naturally wary of course, but given the fact that everything she's said so far has held true, he's willing to show some faith.

"If I lose a hand doing this, I shall be most displeased," he answers, walking to the hatch, and raising his hand to touch the panel. To aid the imagination process, he closes his eyes briefly. When he opens them again, he's appropriately stunned to see a shiny red apple inside the hatch.

"Did I do that?"

"Yes, you did." Elena's smile brightens, and she nods, just to underscore her point. "It's safe to eat, this is how we get our food around here, but you can make anything else small enough to fit through the hatch as long as it's not alive, as far as I can tell. So that's food and water." She's focusing on the essentials of life first, since direct exploration was the only thing that convinced her of the reality of the rest of the situation.

"Moving on to shelter, the name of the city you're in is called Taxon, and...it's probably going to look different from what you're used to. Pro tip, don't walk in front of the fast moving metal objects." She laughs, lightly. "Any empty building is fine to sleep in, if you want it, most of the people here are not...really people, they're the Extras, they're hard to explain. I will, in a minute, but first you should know some people bring their homes with them, so you might want to trying looking for that, first. Everyone brings some part of their world with them."

Unfortunately, Arthur doesn't look too thrilled with having generated an apple using his brain. It can only be magic, and the use of magic is forbidden-- he would have to keep this from his father, assuming he ever got to see his father again.

In the meantime however, there are more immediate concerns. A lot of them, apparently. He frowns as Elena talks, letting the points about moving metal objects and people-not-people pass him by momentarily, in favour of addressing the last one.

"Part of their world? And how do you go about finding this part? Is there some sort of map I can use?"

[holo] azurehalo January 30 2010, 02:24:30 UTC
"Yes-" Elena describes the process for accessing the map on the tablet carefully, in terms that are as straightforward and simple as she can manage to make them, which is 'fairly'; when she's giving instructions her tone softens, and she pauses after she's done.

"You can also see where people are, on that. If you can't find somewhere you know...find my dot, I'm staying in this castle with the Countess Petrana, I'll sure she wouldn't throw you out in the street. Just in case." She looks more serious, and even quietly concerned. "You're going to be fine. I don't know if you were worried about that, but you will be, so don't start."

"My only worry is for my people. I need to get back to them," he answers, surprisingly honestly, and with a pronounced frown that's mostly due to the situation in general, and partly due to the tablet. Needless to say, he's never seen anything like it before, and it's profoundly confusing.

"Thank you," he nods gratefully, in response to Elena's offer. "You've been very gracious. If it's ever in my power to repay you, I'll see to it that I do."

"Don't worry about it, Arthur." She's probably not supposed to call him by his given name, but 'Prince' feels awkward when what she sees is a boy who reminds her enough of Matt to make her homesick all over again. Of course, Matt would have been less 'sword swinging' and more 'quietly unnerved', but it doesn't have to be a perfect resemblance - in fact, the differences might actually make her miss him more and feel worse for this new arrival at the same time.

"My fiance - the boy I'm going to marry, my betrothed? I guess that's the word, anyway, his name is Stefan Salvatore, and we're both trying to get home too, like I said, so...once you're settled in, maybe we could all try to work out our plans together? The more people working towards the same goal, the better our chances are, I think."

Arthur is used to being called 'sire' by the majority of people, but as he's no longer in Camelot (and as Elena rightfully pointed out, he's not her royalty), being called by his name isn't something he minds.

"It's fortunate that the two of you were brought here together," he observes, (rather maturely, really). "And of course. Many hands make light work. I'll try to contact you at some point... assuming I ever get the hang of this overly shiny... instrument of torture."

"I promise it's not an instrument of torture," Elena says, suppressing the urge to laugh; fondly, but it'd still be laughter, and she's trying to be mature herself. "And yes, it's very fortunate - maybe you're not alone here, either."

"Actually, even if everyone here is new to you, you're not alone," she amends, after a brief moment of reflecting on her words. "None of us are. So call me--get in touch with me through the tablet any time, or with Stefan, for planning or whatever else comes up, okay? Even just to talk."
