[HOLO] Arrival

It was a strange thing for a man like John Druitt to feel the tug on his heartstrings that came with paternal instinct. He had never known what it was like to be a father. He had never imagined that he would care about another soul, but as he looked on Ashley Magnus, the daughter he had only recently discovered existed at all, he found himself wishing harm upon all those that had dared harm her. He watched as she slept, standing with her mother, his former lover, Helen. Now he understood why she had taken so many lengths to keep the two of them, father and daughter apart. He had been a monster, and she was only concerned for her child’s well being. He wanted to explain that he understood, but all John could do was silently express his regret and slowly step away from the door frame.

He only made it halfway down the hall before he stopped to turn, to say something to Helen. He still cared about her, quite a lot if he gave himself the time to admit it, but what was there to say. He didn’t have the chance to try. The world melted around him. It wasn’t like his gift. It was perverted and wrong, this way he was pulled from his reality and thrust harshly into another. A hoarse shout echoed in an unnatural way.

“Hello?!” He didn’t recognize the place. As John’s eyes sought anything familiar, he let out a short growl of frustration. “Is there anyone out there? Helen?” Glancing upwards, his brow furrowed in confusion at the device that lurked above. “Think you can keep me here, do you?” He spoke again to the ‘others’ he was sure were watching. John laughed and attempted to teleport out of the complex, back to the Sanctuary. He instead found himself standing exactly where he stood. “Wha-?” Confusion was quickly replaced with anger.

It was only then that he noted the metal fused into his skin. Soon after, he found his eyes drawn to the pedestal. John was not a man for technology, and as he picked up the strange device, he found himself more confused by it than anything else. “Whatever this is, it’s not going to work. I don’t plan on being your willing lab rat.” His voice grew more and more angered the longer he went unanswered.
