I remember the first time I joined LJ my dear friend
festivewind told me "just don't forget to comment when you take anything, it's important". I never forget her words, she's the one who taught me a lot of things about fandom. Related to that,
eamesie also emphasizes on comment and feedback for artists/writers whose work we love.
I know people are lazy, number of people commenting/thanking is always MUCH LESS than the number of people who actually enjoyed the post/taking anything. It's a usual thing in fandom. But still, when it happens to you it sucks so hard.
I have this week off for Eid holiday. Haven't been making any graphics/fandom related stuff for a while, I got excited when I joined
landofart. I posted an
Andrej Pejic fanmix for one of the challenges there. It wasn't easy but I really think I did a good job. I researched songs on androgyny, transgender and cross dressing (there are many but limited), looked them up to make sure the song doesn't suck, searched their lyrics, made a cover and back cover (which took a lot of time), waited for 1,5 hour for my .rar file to be uploaded, made posts and links from comms and tumblr and ... yeah. Really, I'm proud with the mix, it's only my second fanmix ever (first one was a short Tommy EP). I thought not having people commenting on the post wouldn't suck this much, Andrej fandom is small anyway ... until I saw how many people had downloaded the file from my file manager.
Is it so hard to comment just to say 'thanks' or 'taking'? To express appreciation for whatever it is that you enjoyed. For everything posted online whether it's icons, fics, fanmixes, wallpapers, there are work involved. Makers spent their time and energy and when they posted there are no feedback, no comments. People probably went "YAY FREEBIES", took anything they want and left just like that.
This probably should be a note for myself not to expect people to comment, but I wonder. Are people really that lazy? Do we, artists/writers have to do annoying things like password protect our stuff or make a notes like "COMMENT IF TAKING"?
But I guess we can't expect people to have the same perception of internet manner or etiquette anymore. The internet is always changing, fandom world is changing. And with microblogging platform like tumblr where what people need to do is just to click one 'like' or 'reblog' button, thinking of words to say in an LJ comment seems like such a lot of work. Anyway, I'm sure many of you doesn't think so and I appreciate every comment I've ever got from any of you :)
